Madley is on the shorter side for her age, fairly slim and gangly and very unconcerned with her apperance. Her clothes are usually rumpled, looking as if she just rolled out of bed - which most of the time she has. When working, she prefers trousers, usually "borrowed" from boys and too big, riding low on her hips and falling to cover her shoes. She wears her button up shirt with the top two buttons undone and a tie loosely knotted about her neck. The rest of her wardrobe consists of jeans and a collared tee or tank top covered by a button up shirt. She rarely wears skirts but is not above doing so, layering herself in flowing fabrics and scarves and kohling under her eyes just to shake up her friends. Experimentation of all sorts is something Madley firmly believes in, as such her hair makes frequent changes in colour. She's been a red head, a blonde, a brunette, and it's not true. Blondes don't have more fun.

Laura was born to Rachael Prentice and John Madley on 22 January, 1983, twelve years after their first daughter, Melanie Louise and five years before their final child, Joanna Beatrice.

Trying to get noticed while Melanie was making Prefect and Head Girl and Jo taking her first steps, Laura's accomplishments were hard to take notice of. She did well in her studies, was fairly cheerful, although loud and prone to hyperactivity. Of the three sisters, Laura was the most inquisitive, the one most likely to get stuck up a tree, break a bone or get chased inside by bees. She liked dresses, twirling in them so that the skirt poofed out to the sides, cats and dogs and vanilla ice cream with rainbow sprinkles.

No longer the bright, cheery child she once was, she became sullen, moody and withdrawn. Rachael and John chalked it up to a mixture of jealousy, fear of change and her impending adolescence and decided to give her time to get it out of her system. She didn't, and by the time she turned eleven, she'd already smoked her first cigarette, drank her first lager and been caught with a boy from down the street.
