Foundation
The foundation of RationalWiki (Or RW1) remains controversial. According to the LA times it was founded by one Doktor Liptus (or perhaps Rictus) , while others maintain that a shadowy figure known only as "Collin" was responsible. ("Collin" is presently believed to be being held at Guantanamo Bay where he was taken by the FBI immediately after the founding of RW2.)
In any event, all the original cabal members were current or ex-Conservapedia editors trained in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations who turned their talents against CP, by alternating bouts of liberal mockery on RW, and horrific felonious internet wandalism sockpuppeteering on CP.

- Analyzing and refuting the full range of crank ideas.
- Explorations of authoritarianism and fundamentalism.
Many suspect however that not all ties have been cut between the two wikis, and that editors from both RW and CP continue to edit each others' wikis. Notwithstanding this, a number of RW editors have expressed a desire to have no further part of CP and simply to follow their own agenda.
Second Foundation
Following server problems, RW2.1 was created, which was simply RW2 running on a better hosting service.
Patron saint.
Until recently, RW's patron saint has been the goat, personified in Heidrun, but recently various species of other small animals have been proposed. This has led to some division amongst the RationalWikians with the more established followers of the goat fighting a minor skirmish against those few individuals who would introduce the ferret or the painfully obnoxious Long-eared jerboa. This debate is known as The goat vs. jerboa controversies.
