Protocol for Making DI Water

From Protists

1. Put a carboy for DI water into the sink under the still (Barnstead MegaPure MP-6A). Make sure the lower opening is capped tightly.

2. Put the end of the clear tube extending out of the rectangular opening in the front of the still into the opening at the top of the carboy. Cover the opening at the top of the carboy with aluminum foil. Make sure all remaining tubes will empty into the sink.

3. There are 3 switches on the front of the still labeled “Water”, “Operate”, and “Off”. Push the “Water” switch and the “Operate” switches to the right in that order.

4. To the left of the still, there is a red handle for cold water flow. Turn this handle counterclockwise approximately half an inch.

5. There is a tube visible in the front of the still below the 3 switches. Make sure that the bubble in this tube is at or below the 6 line. The height of the bubble can be adjusted by turning the black knob with an “H” on it located below the tube.

6. Check on the still at least at the very beginning and every so often after that to be sure there is no leaking from the still itself. If there is, turn off the still following the instructions in step 8 until you ask someone for further assistance.

7. After the DI water fills the carboy enough to reach the capped lower opening, make sure that there is no leak.

8. Before leaving for the day, be sure to turn off the still.

  • Press the “Off” switch to the right.
  • Remove the DI tube and foil from the top opening of the carboy.
  • Screw the cap on to the top of the carboy.
  • Turn the red handle to the left of the still clockwise until closed.
