A excellent cloud of jargon, debate, and junk theory surrounds the idea of leadership, what it is, who does it, and how to do it well. But if you have just been promoted, and you're accountable for a group for the first time, there are only a handful of items you actually require to know about leadership.

When you get promoted and become accountable for the efficiency of a group you turn into a leader. But you do not undergo some magical change. In fact, it will probably take you over a year to completely adjust to your new function.

You are a leader due to the fact the people in your group treat you like one. The only choice you have is what type of job you will do.

When you become a leader your energy in fact goes down. As an individual contributor, you just have to determine to work harder, longer or smarter to boost performance. When you're accountable for the overall performance of a group, the group is your destiny. They select whether or not to act or not.

When you turn into a leader, your influence goes up. The folks who function for you pay interest to what you say and do. They adjust their behavior accordingly.

The outcome is that you use your behavior (what you say and do) to influence the behavior of the men and women who work for you to obtain a defined objective.

Reaching the objective is element of your job as a leader. The other element is caring for your folks.

It may be feasible to achieve good brief phrase final results with out caring for your people. But you can not obtain extended phrase good results for you or your firm without the willing cooperation of the best people you can locate.

At the end of the day, you can measure your leadership based on these two standards. Did we achieve the mission? Are the members of my group far better off these days than yesterday?
