Beveridge a toast to mental toughness

Beveridge a toast to mental toughness

Most athletes don't react well to being replaced in their favoured position, especially when they're internationals, but Australian netball shooter Kate Beveridge has shown what leaving your ego at the door can do for you.

The 25-year-old Adelaide player was pushed out of her preferred post at goal shooter when the Thunderbirds recruited Jamaican star Carla Borrego for the trans-Tasman championships.

When you're a member of the Australian Diamonds squad and with the Commonwealth Games looming, it was a crushing blow to Beveridge's chances of making the cut.

However, the 193cm shooter has risen above the setback and produced a perfect 17 shots from 17 attempts against the Jamaicans in Sydney on Wednesday night, when she substituted Cath Cox at halftime /Larry_Fitzgerald_Jersey_LQ415.

"It's just part of the sport and there's generally someone who is always ahead of you in your position so you've always got to make sure you're really driven and you always have to give 100 per cent," said Beveridge, who will link with the Melbourne Vixens next season.

"I just wanted to make all the people out there know that I can play goal shooter and I really want to be out there nailing it so people know that's the position I really want to be noticed playing in."

The Diamonds are on edge, with their 15-strong squad soon to be trimmed to the 12 who will travel to Delhi in October Johnson Jersey.

There are five goalers currently in the squad, with one to be cut.

Beveridge has a nervous road to qualification with captain Sharelle McMahon, Cox and the experienced Susan Pratley and Natalie Medhurst up against her.

But for the quality on-court time Beveridge missed in her preferred position last season, she's made up for with her attitude and mental toughness - key components for a Games team Indianapolis Colts Jerseys.

Diamonds coach Norma Plummer is impressed.

"Considering where you saw Kate Beveridge through the ANZ, where she was playing out the front at goal attack , hardly putting up any volume," Plummer said.

"And then when she did she didn't shoot really well . she's not a goal attack, goal shooter is her position and I always felt the minute we got her back there she could start to produce and (I'm) very pleased with that."

With selections imminent, you can only do what you can do, and Beveridge couldn't have done much more with her chance in Sydney.

She'll be hoping for another opportunity to shine against Jamaica in the third Test on the Gold Coast on Sunday.

"I hope it was alright but still a long way to go and still plenty of things I need to improve on to gain that selection. I just hope over the next couple of weeks I get some more opportunities and maybe put out a better performance each time," she said.To read more, please take a look at Below Documents.
