Birds Cole a full go against Giants

Birds Cole a full go against Giants

Eagles defensive end Trent Cole plays every game the same way with a singular ferocity. He also returned an interception of Eli Manning for a touchdown in 2006. (And earlier that same season he kicked offensive tackle Kareem McKenzie in the, uh, lower abdomen while lying flat on his back, drawing a crucial penalty in a game the Eagles lost in overtime. just the nature of the game, the nature of the beast. We want to be the best. We want to play like the best. We see at the end who the best. look at the first play and the last play and you can't tell the difference. I hate pumping (former Eagles defensive end) Hugh (Douglas) up because he's a media guy now, but he has that same motor that Hugh had,Luke Kuechly Jersey. . It's a combination of stamina, love for the game,Cam Newton Jersey, he's always in great shape and he loves to play. href="/nfl" class="inline_link">NFL Films wired Cole for sound during the Eagles victory over Kansas City on Sept. ( shoulda, coulda, woulda, but I didn he said,DeAngelo Williams Jersey.) And still later linebacker Omar Gaither brought down a ballcarrier before Cole had the chance. ( Omar didn hit that dude on that play, Cole said, woulda killed him. />

(Asked about that the other day, Cole smiled and said, experience, baby. Experience, experience, experience. You going to get held, so you just got to play games with it,DeAngelo Williams Jersey, you know? />

His relentless style is all the more remarkable when you consider that he suffers from asthma, which requires him to use an inhaler. a lot of excitement going up to the game,, and during the game there a lot of excitement. I looking forward to it. />Read More:

13 win over Redskins was big for QB Cam Newton confidence

13 win over Redskins was big for QB Cam Newton confidence

Nobody is talking about playoffs in Carolina they have the worst record (2-6) in the NFC at the midway point of the season but Rivera believes Newton has regained some of the swagger that he displayed in 2011 as the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year after engineering three touchdown drives against the Redskins.

"It's all about confidence," Rivera said. "You play this game better when you're confident and when you know things are going to happen for you (instead of) just hoping. It's a mentality."

The Panthers snapped a five-game losing streak by finally closing out an opponent on Sunday, something they've struggled with throughout the first half of the season. Carolina led in the fourth quarter of its previous four games but wound up losing.

Rivera said a win like Sunday can go a long way toward building Newton's confidence back up after a rough start to his sophomore season.

Newton has been criticized by teammates and fans for his play and perceived lack of leadership,Cam Newton Jersey.

Earlier in the year veteran wide receiver Steve Smith called out Newton,?slug=DeAngelo_Williams_Jersey, saying he needed to stop sulking on the sidelines and develop into a better leader. Smith qualified those statements by saying he's confident Newton can one day be a great football player,.

"He's an emotional player," Rivera said of Newton. "He wears his emotions on his sleeve, as we've all seen.

"To be able to come out and play well, and play very consistent, protect the football and make good reads and decisions, and run the ball well like he did. . and to have so many things go right, that's big for an individual, it's big for (our offensive) unit and it's big for the team."

Given the team's close losses last month, Rivera was asked Monday if it would've been better for his team's morale to step on an opponent's throat or win a tight game.

"I think step on the neck and win by more," Rivera said without hesitation.

He thought the Panthers had a chance to bury the Redskins while up by 15 points in the fourth quarter instead of allowing them to cut the lead to eight and make things interesting in the final minutes.

"We still have to get the components at the end and finish better," Newton said after Sunday's game. "We had ample opportunities, great field position on offense that the defense put us in on the 40-yard line. We have to find a way to get a first down. I think that's one thing going back and thinking about the game from my point of view right now, that's what we have to work on."

Still, getting a win was special for Newton.

"It's dessert of the dinner," said Newton, who threw for 201 yards and a touchdown and ran for another against the Redskins.

The Panthers could have a tough time putting together back-to-back wins this week against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos, who have won four of their last five games and are playing lights out on offense.

It will be a stiff challenge for Carolina's defense, which has improved markedly over the past four weeks.

Ironically, that turnabout came at the same time the Panthers lost starting middle linebacker Jon Beason and cornerback Chris Gamble, considered two of their top defensive players, to season-ending injuries.

"We've settled in defensively," Rivera said. "We've found our intensity. We've gone through a lot but one of the things (defensive coordinator) Sean McDermott and his staff have emphasized is takeaways and turnovers. When you have the takeaway/turnover mentality you become aggressive,Tony Gonzalez Jersey."

Rivera isn't setting a goal for the second half of the season in terms of wins, instead saying the Panthers need to start "trending upward."

But he likes the attitude of his team.

He pointed out that despite the team's record guys have been staying after practice normally in groups of 15 to 25 to get in extra work.

"You don't expect that from guys who are going through what they're going through, but that's what they're doing," Rivera said. "These guys want to do things the right way and they're willing to make the sacrifices."

NOTES: Rivera said receiver/returner Kealoha Pilares will have an MRI on his injured right shoulder this week. ,Jonathan Stewart Jersey. The Panthers have until Tuesday to make a decision on whether to bring receiver David Gettis up from the PUP list and Rivera said he could make a move if Pilares' injury is serious.Read More:

Howie Long, the Raider-turned-actor and television host, and Pittsburgh Steelers president Dan Rooney were also honoured.

But Montana's star eclipsed that of everyone else on a day when more than 100 of the 136 living Hall of Famers returned for the biggest reunion in the shrine's history.

Such was the regard with which Montana is held that each of the inductees paid tribute to one of the dominant quarterbacks of the last three decades.

"I had four or five clean shots at Joe that I didn't take them," Long quipped. "His kids are too cute."

Said Wilcox, who played a decade before San Francisco began dominating the NFL: "When I tell people I played for the 49ers, they ask me if I played with Joe Montana. I say I played before Joe and before money."

Lott, like Montana a first-ballot selection, earlier in the day thought he had lost his bearings. Suddenly, it seemed, he was back in the Bay area.

"It's like a Niners' home game," he said. "I never saw so much red."

During his speech Montana recalled how he didn't think he'd get the chance to be inducted at the same time because he signed with Kansas City in 1995. He then broke his leg during preseason and retired.

A player must be retired for five years to be eligible for the Hall. Lott thought that season counted and he wouldn't be up for election until next year.

"Joe," said Lott, who is the godfather of Montana's youngest son, "I'm so honoured to be here with you today."

This was the biggest Hall of Fame turnout, an estimated crowd of 18,000. Montana alone requested 352 passes for friends and family, breaking the record of 310 set by Ohio native Don Shula when he was inducted in 1997.

One woman had it both ways - she wore a red Kansas City jersey with the No. 19 that Montana wore during there in the final two years of his career. She also wore a red 49ers hat.

The crowd began exiting after Montana's induction, fourth of the five, leaving Rooney's induction to start over the murmur of a milling crowd. The murmur was stilled however, by Rooney's introducer, Joe Greene, one of 10 Hall of Fame members from the Steelers that won four Super Bowls in the 1970s,.

Montana was introduced by former 49ers owner Edward DeBartolo Jr. He recounted his ups and downs in football, including a short stint as the seventh-string quarterback at Notre Dame. He recalled his travails on poor San Francisco teams his first two seasons after being chosen in the third round of the 1979 draft.

"I had a very difficult time with it at the beginning," he said of his election to the Hall last January. "I don't think I was looking at it in the proper perspective. I saw the Hall of Fame as an ending point.

"I felt like, well, I'm only 44 years old. I feel like I'm being in my grave, in my coffin alive and they're throwing dirt on me. And I can feel it and I'm trying to get out."

But Montana said things changed this weekend, when he was surrounded by players he idolized while growing up. And, Montana noted, he was again treated like a rookie.

"These past three days, spending time with these gentlemen behind me, I think I really got the true meaning of what this is all about," he said.
