Pieman 3: The Cursed Emerald 2007 is the final film in the Pieman Trilogy, directed by Ciaran Hosty, and based on the novel by Liam McDonald. It was produced by Ciaran Hosty Productions during 2006 and 2007 and starred Ciaran Hosty, Sajith Sekaran and Nabeel Shahid. The film was distributed nationwide on November 16 2007 and to date has grossed over £130.

The movie won an Oscar for the best Low Budget Movie at the 80th Academy Awards.

Plot

Due to the heroics of the world's most favoured superhero, Pieman (Ciaran Hosty) the world had been free from pain for over 5 long years. However, in the year 2008, Cheeseman (Sajith Sekaran), arrives back from the dead and teams up with Dimitri Czechoslava (Nabeel Shahid), a specialist in Nuclear Warfare. Together, they create a plan to destroy the world once and for all. The plan involves, stealing a rare old African emerald, which is the key to developing the most powerful and destructive nuclear missile ever created by man. However, only one force is intervening their plan for world domination, Pieman. The movie is hailed as one of the best action adventures of the year and is filled with sublime comedy moments throughout.

Production

The movie was produced by the virtually unknown Ciaran Hosty Productions during 2006 and 2007. The exterior shots were filmed mainly in the Edgware area, however, other exterior shots included Somerset, Cardiff, Lido De Jesolo, Berkshire. The interior shots were mainly filmed in typical London red-brick homes. However, for some special effects shots, some scenes were filmed in front of a green screen, in order to create the illusion of the superhero's powers.

Release

The film opened the 2007 Edgware International Film Festival, making Hosty, at the age of 14, the youngest director ever to be honored so. However, the film was released on DVD Video, VHS and Blu-Ray in the United Kingdom on November 16 2007 and has grossed over £130.

Reception

Critical Reception

The film received negative reviews by the majority. As of April 17 2008, the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes records that 46% of 75 critics gave the film positive reviews, with a consensus that the film's "Cheap production, poor cinematography and irrelevant score spoiled the foundations for a fantastic movie".

On March 13 2008, Michael Bay hailed the originality of the filmed and wrote "..in time this cast and crew and the director Ciaran Hosty will become fantastic figures in the entertainment industry".

Box Office

The film was released in the United Kingdom on November 16 2007 and it has so far grossed over £130.000,000 domestically.

Awards

Pieman 3: The Cursed Emerald has been named among the Top 10 best Low Budget Movies of 2007.
