The series takes place in Banjo City, Indiana and usually revolves around fifth grade teacher Orville Smith and his students, particularly Derrek MacKnox.

Criticism
Most of the criticism of Red State Banjo is centered on the artwork. Most critics complain that the backgrounds are cartoony and/or not detailed enough. Asher Wycoff usually replies to such critics with something to the effect of, "It's a cartoon. What do you expect?"
