Tessa knew she wanted to be a professional arena fighter ever since she won tickets to Battlemania XXIII when she was nine years old. She trained diligently ever since that day to be the best she could be, going so far as to place third in the Junior League Championship when she was twelve years old, losing in the quarterfinals to fellow academy student Nicole Blackclaw. During her freshman year at the academy Tessa showed great promise, with a winning combination of power, skill, and determination. During the final exams of that year she was matched against fellow freshman standout Andy Castillo, an aron, in a classic match of speed vs. power.

Tessa had control of most of the match, wearing Andy down with her speed and electrical attacks. With desperation setting in Andy charged at her with an all-out attack, hoping to end the battle with the one shot he had. Tessa moved to dodge his badly-telegraphed attack but slipped on the arena floor, her leg going out from under her. She twisted awkwardly and took the hit hard, flipping head over heels and landing very badly, not getting up. Andy's celebration of his apparent victory was cut short when it became obvious that Tessa was badly hurt.

Tessa suffered a broken back from the hit and fall and was paralyzed from the waist down. It was nobody's fault, but one of those rare and unfortunate accidents that can happen in any contact sport. Tessa never blamed Andy for a moment but he never forgave himself, vowing never to battle again. As for Tessa she returned the following year with a focus in coaching, eventually coming into the position as head student coach under academy coach Michael Marceau, himself a former world champion. Although Tessa isn't permitted to battle in official matches she has had a few unofficial sparring matches from her wheelchair despite her handicap, against doctor's orders of course.

Tessa views her current role as coach to be a temporary one, she's undergoing intense rehabilitative therapy in an effort to not only walk but battle again. However it's not in her nature to do half a job of anything and so she throws herself into her coaching duties with the same dedication that she does anything else. Tessa is highly skilled at the mental aspects of battling and has a knack for spotting a fighter's flaws and strengths. She often assists fellow students in overcoming the former while accentuating the latter and also serves as the official coach for her brother Dominic's team, Team Krimson.

"Gale" Baratynsky is the first daughter of two career battlers-- one of them (Dad) a two-time regional champion-- which is much less fun than it sounds, since the pressure being put on her to excel is unthinkably intense. As a result, Galina has devoted a massive amount of time to succeeding at PCA, and though it appears to be working so far it's come at the cost of anything resembling a social life. About the only exception is working with her teammates in the Speed Demons.

Galina's parents wanted to make sure their daughter would have nothing but the best in her life, and as a result of their fighting careers, they had the financial means to ensure that. As a result, Galina is a walking textbook of battle stratagem and theory, the result of many hours of childhood tutoring, and has become something of a tactical wizard. It was no surprise that she was chosen by the former TSD Captain to replace him when he graduated. Eternally calm and collected, Galina is a natural leader, ensuring that the battlefield situation is always going the way she wants it.

Karma's life wasn't as harsh as Edge's, as empty as Five's, nor as personally wrecked as K-Rush's, but it was one that didn't prepare her for the 'real' world. The child of Purists, a small quasi-cult of pokemorphs seeking to distance themselves from the 'madness and spiritual emptiness' of the modern day, Karma grew up with few of the things that most young pokemorphs take for granted, and was given in its place a surprisingly rigorous regimen than was meant to hone body and mind, bringing them as close to the Way Things Were as the day and age could allow. However, even considering their attempts to keep free of outside influence, the Purists did have external contact from time to time, and one of these visitors was an old friend of one of the battlers-turned-leaders (and Karma's personal tutor, a Hitmonchan named Caldera) of Karma's home camp, Jethro Biggs.

Mainly there to collect recyclables and talk shop with said old friend, he took a liking to the young Heracross and would, much to the Purists' dismay, occasionally bring sweets and comic books with him, things Karma was rather firmly 'suggested' she shouldn't partake of but nonetheless adored. Eventually, Jethro himself was confronted after a particularly grueling day of collecting scrap, and told that he was no longer welcome to visit the camp and would have to leave at sunrise. It would come to a shock to the Wigglytuff when, carrying a duffel bag containing all her belongings, Karma followed him out of the camp at first light, having worked up the courage to leave behind all she knew to 'see the world'. At first wary, Jethro nonetheless took her along, after getting confirmation from Caldera that it was her decision. From the way Caldera tersely put it, the camp was more angry at Jethro for 'corrupting' her than it was upset at Karma for her acting on her curiosity. Upset that he'd lost a friend (and a lucrative source of recyclables), he felt nonetheless obligated to make sure that Karma was well taken care of.

In combat, Karma is a Fighting-type prodigy; her own natural talents are astounding, and Caldera himself (a champion time and again before leaving society) trained her extensively and personally from the time she was four. Jethro knows she's capable, and even the rest of her team is aware that she'd likely be the team leader herself if she had a more decisive personality. Instead, she is the team's 'ace in the hole', one they're willing to bring out to take down stubborn, powerful opponents. While Karma is quite adept at dealing damage, the gist of her style revolves around an Aikido-like redirection of her opponent's momentum (making good use of Counter and Endure -> Reversal, a technique combination that Five's named 'Karmic Feedback'), making them pay for over-committing to an attack or defense. She combines this with direct damage, even incorporating the non-Fighting techniques she knows into her style, to bring a total-package fighting style to the table.

Recently, she's come to discover that Caldera has left the Purists, and has formed his own Gym. She now spends time there, learning at the knee of her old master and blossoming as a potential champion.

Shore, better known by his team nickname Edge, isn't the oldest, or even the strongest, but he's the most stubborn and unyielding when it comes to day-to-day living, and the toughest emotionally. A young Scyther with little real guidance growing up, he quickly fell into the wrong crowds and just barely avoided very long stays in juvenile detention centers, due to both dumb luck and authorities seeing something in him that he didn't see in himself: potential outside of his recessive steel-green coloration. A hard life gave him some wisdom to work with, and fate would lead him to Jethro 'J' Biggs, the Wigglytuff former battler-turned scrap recycler that would become his team's father figure, coach and best friend. The Wigglytuff man offered Shore a place to live, since at the time Shore's only other alternatives were a juvenile hall or a prison cell, and neither were terribly appealing. Getting approval from the only relative in his life (his older Scyther brother, who was in prison at the time) was simple, and in short order, J had his own room in a large converted warehouse on the premises of Biggs' junkyard and thrift store (Fatman's Scrap and Stuff). Much to his surprise, he soon saw that J had brought in three others, bug-types like himself. As first apprehensive, he realized just why J had done this; the best way to confront one's personal issues was with support, and this was as close to family as the lot of them had ever had. Taking the lead in getting the others settled, Edge ended up the group's 'big brother' and, once the lot of them entered the Academy, team leader.

As a combatant, Edge is a mixture of speed and undeniable durability, but can nonetheless cause serious damage quickly. He prefers to stay on an opponent constantly, not giving them time to breathe or even think---this can work against him with an agile opponent, as he runs the risk of 'punching himself out' if his rapid-fire offensive is evaded for the most part. Furthermore, he is fearless to a fault, and doesn't alter his tactics even when faced with those bearing fire-type attacks; Edge would rather lose horribly and embarrassingly than cower and hesitate.

Recently, the loss of his brother has added even more weight onto his shoulders, and Edge is afraid that he might not have the will or direction to battle properly anymore. Even still, he remains on the team, hiding his own fears as he always does -- with a wall of seeming indifference. This time, though, the hurt may be too deep for him to simply ignore and power through. Only time will tell.

Dawn was born in Slateport City in the Hoenn region. Her mother died due to complications during Dawn's birth, leaving her father alone to raise Dawn and her older sister alone, a task he never felt up to. Dawn's sister was always a troublemaker, always blaming Dawn for their mother's death, and with their father's attention focused on Shannon, Dawn was left to raise herself for the most part.

Fortunately she was intelligent and well-adjusted enough to do so. Dawn was always the quiet type, and did very well in school both in academic and physical activities. She earned a scholarship to attend the Three Regis Combat Academy in Hoenn, one of the region's best battle academies, and quickly joined a team with three other ponytas - brothers Kalim and Raza Ibrahil and strongmon Kristoff Feurhaffe. The team did very well despite their apparent lack of diversity but problems at the school grew to the point where the entire team felt the need to transfer, along with many other students who seemed to be abandoning a sinking ship.

Now at the Poke-Combat Academy, Dawn and her team are looking to make an impact, bringing experience and unexpected training to the arena with them. Dawn is a very intelligent and well-rounded fighter, able to quickly adapt to any opponent's attacks and style. She comes up with most of the team's tactics and training and serves as the brains of the team, even though she isn't the team leader. She handles her matches in a calm, calculating manner, often baiting opponents while remaining very difficult to predict herself.

Kristoff Feurhaffe's father Abraham is a high-ranking scientist for the Devon Corporation in Rustboro City. Always a 'mon of science the elder equine naturally wanted his son to follow in his hoofsteps in order to learn, study, and make the world a better place for all pokemon. But alas, that was not to be.

Born with a larger than average build and greater than average strength, courtesy of his rhyhorn mother, Kristoff's attentions quickly turned to more physical activities. Activities such as sports and brawling came naturally to him and were a lot more fun than cramming an endless stream of books under his nose. Disappointed but still hoping that his son would see the educational light, Kristoff's father enrolled him in the prestigious Three Regis Combat Academy in Hoenn, hoping that the school's battle program would lure him into more scholarly pursuits while allowing him to maintain his growing interest in battling.

Unfortunately it didn't quite work. Kristoff did very well in his battles but neglected his academic studies, much to his father's chagrin. His strength caught the attention of fellow ponytas Kalim and Raza Ibrahil who needed some muscle to add to their team, and though originally hesitant to add another of the same species, quickly realized that his strength and skill would be too great of an asset to pass up. Their search for a fourth member would lead to a fourth ponyta, Dawn, completing their one-species team. Although largely regarded as a "gimmick" team, they did quite well despite Kristoff's academic slacking off. Unfortunately several scandals at the school prompted the entire team to transfer to another academy, the Poke-Combat Academy in Kanto.

Kristoff is energetic and outgoing, if a bit stubborn and overbearing at times. Although his size and strength mark him as something of a brute, he's actually a lot smarter than he lets on. He tends to downplay his intelligence in order to keep his father from pressuring him to succeed academically but is hardly the dumb jock that many opponents mistake him for. In a battle he's a very physical fighter, using his strength and stamina to overwhelm opponents, but has a surprising number of odd and unusual tricks up his sleeve and a knack for catching opponents off-guard.

Much like the others, growing up wasn't easy for Treori, but his reasons for having ended up with J and the others are much different. His home life was safe enough, and Tre grew up a bright young man with a chance at having a good future. The problem was that, as soon as puberty hit, Tre discovered that he was prone to fits of extreme anger over the smallest things or sustained frustration, reacting horribly to what most others would brush off. While medication and counseling seemed to help, a sudden episode at home led to him severely injuring his father and ending up in cuffs. No charges were pressed, and his family was willing to accept him back, but he refused, too upset at himself to return. A desperate call to his psychiatrist led him to the doorstep of Jethro Biggs, and Treori became the fourth and final 'guest' at J's junkyard. He brought with him his surprising intelligence (welcome enough to the academically struggling Edge and Five), but also his unpredictable bursts of fury. He's had more than a few scraps with the others since then, but at the same time they all have tried their best to help him, especially Karma---her teaching him meditative techniques has helped him tremendously along with the regular talks and meds, and his 'episodes' are far less frequent, and even those that come pass quickly and with little more than inanimate objects being broken or tossed about.

K-Rush is power, plain and simple. To let him get close is to invite disaster, as he has no qualms about punching the daylights out of someone, tossing them around, or crushing them into submission between those powerful pincers of his -- he is known for being more than willing to try for a Guillotine immediately at battle's start. He fights smart as well as tough, but is nonetheless prone to leaving himself open to retaliation... and becomes almost dangerously reckless and uncontrolled if he grows angry during a match.

Having made peace with himself and his parents, Tre is well on his way to getting his mind and business in order. He hasn't had an 'episode' for a long time, and Hega's presence and love is definitely helping him stay... adjusted.

Born in Azalea Town, Johto, Robert's parents divorced when he was young, and his mother kept poor contact with him at best. Raised by his father and, later, by both his father and stepmother when he re-married, Robert was quickly discovered to be something of a mild prodigy in the sciences, and was given an academic scholarship to the PCA for all four years based on his achievements. Keeping largely to himself the past few years, he's recently started to come out of his shell with regard to both friends and romance, becoming fast friends (and scholarly rivals) with Penny Cartego, and most recently, boyfriend to Licorice Swirl, finding something oddly comforting about the presence of someone so unlike himself. Penelope, also known as Penny or by her team name "Five", is every bit the flighty teen with a love for cute things, bright colors and sweets (almost as much as Karma), but has more than her fair share of quirks and personal problems. As a young Ledyba, she grew up in a home of broken promises, with a mother dealing with numerous issues carried in from her past and a too-understanding enabler father. While not a poor family, the majority of money went into bailing Penny's mother out of debt... and putting her back into it---Penny suspected gambling, but never could get a straight answer. Tired of doing without the basics, as well as her mother's constant lies, she packed her things and moved in with a friend... only to find out that her distrust of her family had translated into a general distrust of *everyone*. Not only that, but she found lying and stringing others along for her own benefit was actually pretty useful; as much as she liked where it could lead and what it could get, it bothered her that she was turning into her mother. Luck would have it that she came across Jethro Biggs before moving in with another 'friend' for the sixth time in three months. Jethro offered her a place, and someone to talk to. Deciding, just this once, to give this man a try, she discovered not only that he was serious, but that she wasn't the only one he'd taken in. Even with her new 'family' and support, Penny still finds herself having a hard time trusting others, and still lies regularly at the drop of a hat---she's working hard on trying to get rid of these habits, but it's slow going.

A scrapper at heart, she's refined her style by working alongside Karma, and has integrated her teachings into the blistering-fast hit-and-run style she employs in a fight, making up for her lack of actual stopping power. Five regularly shouts out the 'Southern Cross Style' attack names she's given her attacks in the middle of combat, much to the embarrassment of her team---for instance she occasionally calls her Comet Punch (which she likes to use to finish a fight) the 'Southern Cross Roaring Red Explosion'. Everyone blames this on Karma letting Five into her massive comic collection... even Karma herself.

Something about recent events has made her all the more dedicated to become better than she is, as she sees herself at Junkyard's weak link (which is true) and that she's far behind the others (which isn't quite so true) in talent. This renewed dedication has the others a little concerned, as it's not like her to be so... well, serious.

Rylai is your typical spoiled brat, born to rich parents who never paid much attention to her. They let her do whatever she wanted because it was easier than taking time out from their busy work schedules in order to show her any attention or discipline. Rylai developed an acerbic, grating personality, finding fault with nearly everyone and everything, leading a crusade against one environmental or social concern after another and making a career out of defying authority just for the sake of doing so.

Realizing too late that their daughter needed some discipline, Rylai's parents enrolled her in the Poke-Combat Academy, hoping it would serve as an outlet for her aggressive acting out as well as providing the focus and structure that they were unwilling or unable to provide, ultimately trying to solve the problem by throwing money at it. It didn't work. Rylai's rebellious ways have continued, yet she's intelligent and crafty enough to know just how far she can push things and remain out of serious trouble, carefully straddling the line between nuisance and menace.

This angry young sunflora has never managed to stay on a team for long, and currently battles as an independent. Contrary to her thug-like exterior, she's actually very intelligent and well-read. She knows that the way to undermine authority is through knowledge and that by getting herself into a recognizable position of authority she can get the powers that be to listen to her. Much to the chagrin of many of those she angers in her tirades, she's a highly skilled and talented combatant who has taken on and beaten a surprising number and variety of opponents in her time.
