Kenton is a small community in Cimarron County, Oklahoma that was founded in 1893. The town is now a ghost of what it used to be. It's only store, "The Merc" is for sale although still in business. However, it is still has two bed and breakfasts, a restaurant (now closed down), three church congregations, and a post office, which was established May 12 1891. Located immediately south of the town is Camp Billy Joe, home of Black Mesa Bible Camp as the sign reads. Nearby are three sites that appear on the National Register of Historic Places; Bat Cave Archaeological Site, Red Ghost Cave Archaeological District, and the Three Entrance Cave Archaeological District. Just to the northwest of town is the Black Mesa, Oklahoma's highest point (elevation: 4,978 feet). Although the entire state of Oklahoma is officially on central time, residents of Kenton go by mountain time, which actually begins a few miles (kilometers) west. To avoid confusion "Mountain Time" is often added when giving the time to visitors. The business hours posted on the signs for The Merc and the churches all end with "MT" or "MST" to specify Mountain Time.
