The tubax (Category 1), developed in 1999 by Benedikt Eppelsheim, is somewhat like a saxophone. Indeed, Eppelsheim calls it a sax, although arguably it's really its own instrument family. Like conventional saxes, it's a single-reed conical-bore instrument made of metal, and has the same fingering; but it has a less tapered bore, and is "folded" in a more compact shape.

Tubaxes are presently made in two sizes and three keys:

Contrabass tubax in Eb.

Subcontrabass tubax in C and Bb. Note that Adolphe Sax proposed a subcontrabass sax, but none has ever been made.
