The heckelphone (Category 1) is a double reed conical bore instrument introduced in 1904 by Wilhelm Heckel and his sons. The original and least odd type of heckelphone is characterized by a broad bell, large tone holes, and a globular bell. It is pitched in C, one octave below the oboe.

Besides the original heckelphone, the heckelphone family consists of:

Piccolo heckelphone in F, one fourth above the oboe.
Terz heckelphone in Eb, one minor third above the oboe.

Les Roseaux Chantants web site (in French and German) appears to be about a double reed chamber music group; the page about one of its members includes a photo of a heckelphone, a baritone oboe, an English horn, an oboe d'amore, an oboe, and a musette. There's also a link to a page with photos and some information about the heckelphone, the basse de musette, and the bassoon d'amour.
