Mundane instruments, for our purposes, are instruments that are not odd.
... Oh, all right. An instrument is mundane if it is, or ever has been, in any major geographical area, for any significant period of time, in any major musical genre, in widespread use.
Otherwise it's odd.
That's qualitative, but at least it's something to go on. Some clarifications:
- "major geographical area" = size of a good-sized country or larger
- "significant period of time" = more than a couple of decades
- "major musical genre" = mainstream classical, jazz, rock, pop -- this obviously imposes a Western bias
