The heckelphone (Category 1) is a double reed conical bore instrument introduced in 1904 by Wilhelm Heckel and his sons. The original and least odd type of heckelphone is characterized by a broad bell, large tone holes, and a globular bell. It is pitched in C, one octave below the oboe.

Besides the original heckelphone, the heckelphone family consists of:

Piccolo heckelphone in F, one fourth above the oboe.
Terz heckelphone in Eb, one minor third above the oboe.
