Finding Information

Books

Books can be a valuable source of information. You may be directed to a variety of textbooks by your lecturers. Search NUIN our web based catalogue to locate books in the library.

Audiovisual resources

Napier University has an off-air recording licence that allows NULIS to record most programmes broadcast on terrestrial TV. For example, the BBC series "Working in sport and leisure" has been recorded. Also selected Open University programes can be recorded. These videos are on our catalogue and can be located by limiting to videos.

Statistics

The National Statistics web site can provide statistics on various aspects of sport participation as well as direct you to useful publications. Some of this information is published in Social Trends (REF 314.1 SOC) and Living in Britain - General Household Survey (REF 314.1 OFF).

Conference Proceedings

Conference Proceedings are a valuable source of information on the latest academic research. SPORTDiscus is a good source of conference proceedings in sport science. When conference proceedings are purchased in print they are shelved as part of the book stock. Check NUIN under the conference title to see if NULIS holds a copy of the title you require. If not then you may be able to request it via our Document Supply service.

Theses

Theses are an important source of academic research especially when undertaking your Honours project. They are indexed in the following sources:

   * Index to theses (with abstracts) accepted for higher degrees by the Universities of Great Britain and Ireland

Sources outside Napier

If you are in your final or honours year, a postgraduate or research student, or a member of staff you may wish to extend your information search outside NULIS. Find information about access to other libraries and their catalogues on the following pages:

   * Edinburgh Libraries
   * Using other University libraries in Scotland
   * Access to other libraries
   * Catalogues of other libraries

Items not available locally may be obtained using the Document Supply service

Journals and databases

Journals can be in paper or electronic format, some titles may be in both formats.

Most sport sciences titles are available at Merchiston Campus Library, but related titles may also be available at other Campus Libraries.

Use NUIN (the library catalogue) to find paper and electronic journals. This will provide information on the years/issues available and access details. N.B You can only search NUIN for journal titles not article titles or content.

To find journal articles you need to use databases. There are two ways to search databases:

NUINLink - this search tool groups electronic databases by subject and enables you to retrieve journal articles by performing a single search on several databases at once. NUINLink can also be used to search for individual electronic journals. N.B not all databases can be searched within NUINLink; some need to be searched individually. Read more information about using NUINLink.

Alternatively, you can search individual databases. Depending on the topic you are working on, you may wish to look at some of the databases of use to other subject areas e.g. Psychology. The most useful for sport sciences are listed below. Some of these sources may provide full text articles (FT):

Databases

   * AMED - includes physiotherapy, psychology and rehabilitation from an allied and alternative medicine point of view
   * Biology Digest via CSA Illumina
   * Biotechnology and Bioengineering via CSA Illumina
   * CAB Abstracts - covers aspects of human nutrition and sport
   * Coaching Science Abstracts - free US based service
   * CSA Illumina - contains muliple databases

   * Zetoc - contents of British Library journal holdings, wide subject range

NB Some of these databases only allow a limited number of users on at a time. Use the Exit or Log out buttons provided within the database when you are finished.
