Cabinet of St Thomas
From Nseurope
The Cabinet of St Thomas is a formal body composed of senior government officials, appointed by the Prime Minister. Most membes of the cabinet are senior government ministers, the majority being heads of Government Departments with the title of Secretary of State. All formal members of the cabinet are drawn from either Chamber in Parliament.
Traditionaly the cabinet was the main decision making body of the executive with the Prime Minister as its chair. Over time however the cabinet has developed to a more consultative comittee where issues across government are discussed with the Prime Minister or individual ministers taking decisions. The cabinet is supported by the Cabinet Secretariat which is a department within the Office of the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister uses the Royal Perogative powers to appoint and dismiss members of the cabinet and the wider government, this means the formal approval of the sovereign is required for appointments to the cabinet. In practice the monarch's approval is merely a formality however there have been occassions when the monarch has refused to approve certain appointments.
