SWOT analysis – Del.icio.us
Strengths
• Very easy to use and when you download it it automatically puts a link into your desktop for ease of use • Can transfer bookmarks from your browser to Del.icio.us, or from Del.icio.us to your hard drive. • Not all bookmarks have to be shared • Ability to put a Creative Commons Licence on your bookmark. However,’ Your use of a license in connection with your compilation does not affect del.icio.us's right to access and use it in connection with the Services, the Site or otherwise in connection with our business.’ Can only copyright list, not content. • Can bundle tags to make layout more visual • Ability to subscribe to a tag to keep up to date with common interests (eg subscribe to NewT tag) • User can create a network and save links for other people to look at or a shared account can be created for collaborative work • Has a blog and community mailing list for help • Search engine embedded to search other users’ links
Weaknesses
• Some people may not like it as Yahoo now own it so it may be seen as ‘commercial’ and the founder no longer develops for them. • Users are used to Facebook and MySpace and so may like more personalisation such as a profile picture etc.
Opportunities
• Arguably the most well-known social bookmarking site and has the most experience in innovation in that area.
Threats
• Other social bookmarking sites are emerging that may attract the more eclectic user
