The Hyde Theater was built in 1805 for the fledgling Argos community. The theater was used as a theater and town meetings were held on stage until 1850, when the town hall was built.

The theater underwent renovations in 1875, 1936, and the last major renovation started in 1983. It was never completed, interrupted because of labor disputes and a lack of funds.

It permanently closed in the summer of 1985, and was promptly boarded up to prevent looters from entering.

The basement is still used as storage for all of the old costumes and props, and it has been rumored in the neighborhood that some kind of satanic cult uses it for rituals or weird sexual initiations, but no one can say for sure.
