Sergei was born to a Russian-born mother and an American father, both who had clawed their way up from a social bottom to some position of financial safety. As both prized the ability to do whatever it takes for personal and financial gain, no matter the cost to others, Sergei had grown up to be a terribly self-serving but otherwise normal person. What that says about normality is any guess.
Sergei wasn't exceptional in his intelligence, but he more than made up in clever improvisation. In this case, he improvised mostly using his physical acumen. He made his way through school relying on force of personality and muscle, convincing others to help him with classwork in exchange for protection and other solutions that needed brute force. It was only natural that he joined the Army out of high school, deciding that college was a waste on him and that he'd simply be doing what he did in high school for a few more years. It was exactly that, and in combat he excelled. His selfishness turned into a canny timing at brutally taking down others, and when his time in the army ended, he made contacts that gave him a way to continue selling his services as a soldier for a far higher price.
He had seen work in Eastern Europe, where his knowledge of the Russian language gave him an in that others didn't have. After a final stint in Chechnia, Sergei returned to the states to take an offer from Argos. The offer was vague, but corporate types didn't strike him as the most forward. Then they made the offer to be a part of the "Tarot" experiment. The risks were high, but so would be the payout. He accepted the contract, taking on the designation "Tower" for the duration of said contract. When the invasive operation into his hindbrain was complete, and after the needed recovery, he was immediately deployed in a city-wide emergency towards one of Argos' hospitals.
