He's a figure known the world over, a support for gift giving, the winter holidays and cookie eating. At times he's named Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas or Kris Kringle and is perhaps the absolute most famous heavyset celebrity - well at least to precede Elvis Presley. Yes, he is the loveable, suffering and jolly previous chap we call Santa Claus. In if the man in the red suit was the real thing 1897 one it was taken by little girl from Manhattan, at the urging of her father, upon herself to ask the New York Sun Newspaper once and for several.

Countless numbers of letters are written to newspapers throughout the world every year, and few if any, will ever view a moment of popularity beyond the visitor of their respective dailies. But, over a hundred years ago a simple letter comprised of only the words, I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is number Santa Claus. Papa says, If it is seen by you in Sunlight, it's therefore. Please tell me the facts, is there a Santa Claus? Could go on to become among the most enduring symbols of North Americas just take on Xmas.

One day in September 1897 (historians speculate that the question arose not in December as one might expect, in September, because this would have been soon after the new school year had started and kids would have already been turning their attention to Christmas) young Virginia O'Hanlon greeted her father, Dr. Philip O'Hanlon (who worked for a coroners office), with the kind of purity only ab muscles young can possess. She likely asked in a tiny but curious speech if the rumours of her school chums were right, was Santa Claus artificial? Today unsure for sure how tense the air got in the room at that moment when Mr OHanlons only son or daughter asked him to debunk or agree with the story of St. Nick, we can only think that he didn't have the center to break the reality to her himself. And therefore the letter (and its answer) that would head to become almost as much emblematic of the Xmas season as Santa himself was created.

Off Virginia visited write a letter at her fathers idea, which she sent himself, to the Newest York Sun newspaper where its response was assigned to an ex-civil war correspondent made newspaper editorial writer by the name of Francis Pharcellus Church. Story has it that Mr Church wasn't exactly leaping for joy at the job, but he took the childs letter back once again to his desk and proceeded to publish one of the most stirring tributes to Christmas that has ever adorned the pages of any paper.

Perhaps it was the atrocities of war he had witnessed firsthand, perhaps it was his own need to rely on Father Christmas, or perhaps it was exactly what he'd have said had anyone asked him if Santa was real, but that day Francis Church wrote an earnest, dramatic and almost poetic a reaction to Miss OHanlons problem. In number small conditions he assured her that certainly Santa Claus, or at minimum the distinguished spirit and message of Saint Nicholass image were as real as other things on the planet.

Though at the time it ran in the New York Sun it was but the seventh column on its site, this candid, exciting and touching answer would go on to locate its way into the minds and Christmases of huge numbers of people, spanning several generations since the 1890s.

In reality the letter and its solution are published in tons of papers around the globe each year, a tribute and testimony to Virginias, Francis Churchs and Santa Clauss contribution to the wonder, timeless beauty and miracle of Xmas.
