A weird side benefit of livnig in Kansas is we live in Tornado Alley  so the schools teach safety every year  and every year they come home and discuss what to do if a tornado comes along  what room we should all go into and then they make sure there is food, water and blankets there.   (The blankets provide some protection from flying debris. )    So we have plans and meeting places in case of fire.  I also do have the stranger danger discussion about once a year with my girls (11 & 13).  I let them know if they are being hurt by someone to tell me, their mom or someone.  I tell them that the person cannot hurt me  they tell you not to tell someone because they are scared.  I do get a strange look from my kids  but at least they know I am here to protect them danger.
