WELSH CONSULTANT’S COMMITTEE

MOTIONS PASSED on THURSDAY 15th MARCH

1. The Welsh Consultants Committee considers that the current application process for specialty training (MTAS) has descended into chaos and is now irrecoverable. We urge the British Medical Association to immediately pull out of the review as the situation is now beyond repair.

2. The Welsh Consultants Committee requests the Central Consultants and Specialists Committee, with the utmost urgency, to survey consultant members across the UK to establish a basis for withdrawing from the MTAS interview process which appears to the Committee to be fatally flawed and unable to select the highest quality candidates for Specialist Training.

3. The Welsh Consultants Committee requests the Central Consultants and Specialists Committee to write out to all UK consultants participating in the MTAS process to remind them of their duty to exercise their professional judgement in line with GMC Guidelines (Good Medical Practice para 15-19). In particular the need to be satisfied that they have all relevant information available on candidates to enable them to score applications such that no colleague would be unfairly treated and the best interests of patients are preserved.
