The mushroom was the most common.It would mke Mario grow and would protect him for 1 hit.In the Mario Kart series,they would give your car a speed boost.

Another common item,the fire flower would give mario the ability to throw fire balls at his foes.

The super leaf let mario fly away and whip his tail at enimies.He looked like a racoon with it.

Frog Suit

The frog suit easily let mario swim easier.However on land,you hopped around like a frog.
