* Nicholas II abdicated as Tsar of Russia and
Grand Duke of Finland 15 March (n.s.) 1917 but
"omitted" to specify as Grand Duke of Alaska;
remaining imperial family fled to Alaska following
execution of Nicholas II on July 17 (n.s.) 1918.

The Grand Duchy of Alaska (Великое Княжество Аляскинское, Velikoye Kiyazhestvo Alaskinskoye, or Аляска, Alaska) is a country in western Arctic North America.

It occupies the large Alaskan peninsula, the Aleutian Islands, and a "panhandle" extending southward along the Pacific coast of North America, bordering British Columbia. The capital, New Archangel, is located in this panhandle, on Baranov Island.

The official language is Russian; the majority of the population is ethnically Russian, but a substantial minority (40%) of the population is of native American (Inuit, Athabaskan, Tlingit, Haida, Aleut, and Yupik) descent.

[edit] History

Alaska is the last remnant of the Russian Empire, with the surviving members of the imperial Romanov family fleeing here following the Russian Revolution in of 1917. From Alaska, formally titled the Russian Empire as opposed to the USSR, they attempted to press their claim to the Russian throne, but, denuded of power, eventually gave up. The country subsequently assumed the name Alaska, albeit styled a Grand Duchy rather than an empire in order to suggest that it was merely a part of a greater Russia upon which the family might eventually exercise a pretension.
