The Republic of Louisiana is a country in southeastern North America. A former colony of France, it is a unitary republic composed of two main parts, Mississippienne and Floride; the eastern region of Floride, with its Spanish-speaking majority, is agitating for seccession or devolution from the French-speaking western region.
[edit] Geography
The Mississippienne region encompasses the west bank of the Mississippi River south of the Missouri River, as well as the Mississippi Delta; Floride encompasses the Florida Peninsula along with most of the Gulf Coast strip between the two main parts of the country. The capital is La Nouvelle-Orléans in the Mississippienne region, while the largest city is Miami, in the Floride region; other large cities include Saint-Louis, Saint-Augustin, Ville-Saint-Pierre, Mobile, Petite Pierre, andBaton Rouge.
The highest point is Mont Magazine, 840 m. Parts of La Nouvelle-Orléans are below sealevel, and protected by dikes; when these were overwhelmed during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, much of the city was devastated by flooding.
