no part of your life is true;
Stephen Temair was once a blessed, blessed young man. He was always a musical prodigy, one of those children who could play several instruments, sing, and compose by the time he was eight, a latter-day Mozart, extraordinarily gifted. Perhaps, one day, he could have been someone famous, someone whose work would endure, long after he was gone, save for two circumstances that forced him forever into the shadows. When he was nineteen, he Awakened as an Acanthus mage, his Awakening coming during a long and fevered session trying to write his final for his composition class, while sick, lightheaded and dizzy. (it remains his finest work, but he can no longer bear to play it, for captured in those notes was a transcendent joy he will never feel again, fragments of what he felt at the moment he inscribed his name upon the Watchtower of Lunargent Thorn, the moment his soul was complete and would never be complete again).
Around the same time, he met a girl, a ballet dancer, graceful and lithe, Juliet: they ended up falling in love with each other, and married soon after they graduated from college, deeply and truly in love. Unfortunately, not all things lasted forever-especially not when the True Fae got involved.
His wife was kidnapped, Taken across the Hedge: he was too late to save her, but Stephen had seen enough to know where she had been taken. And it was then that he made the worst decision of his life, out of love: he could not bear to leave her there, and so he found a way into the Hedge, and went in. The only thing he took with him was, strangely, the harp he had been composing on that day: he did not even think to put it away, but carried it with him when he went after his wife.
The Thorns ripped away his soul, and ripped away his connection to the Supernal, and he forever lost his powers as a mage. But still, he kept on going, until he found the dark realms where the True Fae who had taken his wife dwelt. The Fae in question styled not only himself, but his realm, after Hades in classical Greek mythology.
Stephen does not remember how much time he spent in Hades's realm, searching for his wife. Less then a season, to be sure: when at last he found her, he tried to appeal to the Keeper to let them both go. At first, Hades refused, until Stephen played and sang for him (and he will not, no matter as long as he lives, be able to match that single performance): and with a strange, cunning smile on his face, agreed to let him and his wife go. However, she would be behind him when they left, and if he looked back, the bargain was off.
They were almost out, but her footsteps were so soft, that he feared that she wasn't there, and so he risked a single moment's glance behind.
And he lost her. He doesn't remember how he managed to escape Arcadia, but he stumbled out of the Hedge, alone, into the small apartment that they had shared.
Alone, without even the person he had embarked upon his desperate, foolish quest to try to save, the quest he had shattered himself during. (and will not, cannot be whole again)
