Alessia was the youngest child of a highborn couple, born twenty years after their first child, Vicenzo. Her mother had had a long series of miscarriages after her first child was born, when she was sixteen, and they had given up trying to have children, until Alessia was conceived. Unfortunately, the pregnancy was difficult, compounded by the fact that she was getting on in age: after Alessia was born, her mother's health was never the same, and she passed away one winter five years later, despite the fact that her husband had gone through their resources like water, putting himself into crippling debt, to have the best healers come to try to make her well.

It was not long afterwards that her husband, too, joined her in death: it was whispered that he loved his wife too much, and died of a broken heart, chose to die to join her and leave their children, especially their young daughter, alone, that he hadn't loved them enough. And with nowhere to go, no family at all, Alessia was sent to the nearby abbey to live and vow her life away to the order, a lifetime of service to the Goddess.
