backstory

"Once I loved something so deeply I would have died for it, but I lived instead. Now I can't ever love anything enough to want to live for it, except you."

A very long time ago, Myca Varteres was a (relatively) normal young man, the youngest child in a large family that didn't quite know what to do with him, especially since he was born with magical power, but loved him anyway, was well-liked by the others in his town and with a lover who loved him with all his heart. If everything had happened the way it was supposed to, if the world was even the slightest bit fair, then he would have continued on living happily and having grown old with the people he loved.

But the world isn't fair, especially not a world still broken and recovering from a demon invasion centuries ago that ended the golden age. The Great Seal put into place at the end of that worldshattering war banished most of the demons but trapped some of the powerful ones in the world, where they randomly terrorized things and stories and legends of horrific, immortal monsters spread.

And perhaps predictably, Myca's peaceful world was shattered by one of those powerful demons who came across his hometown and to entertain itself, decided that it would murder everyone in the town and in the surrounding area. Desperately, though he was only half-trained at best, Myca tried to do something to save the people he loved: he defied the demon lord and tried to fight it. Unfortunately, instead, he only managed to annoy it, and its annoyance carried with it a high price.

The demon killed everyone else, cutting a swathe of destruction through the area, and cursed Myca. His curse was a powerful one, two-fold: Myca was cursed to not be able to die and to be constantly run through by a thousand and more metaphysical swords of hatred, both the demon's own hate and the hatred of the world against it. Since then, he's lived (if barely living), alternately trying to find a way to break said curse and fitfully sleeping and dreaming away years at a time.

Recently, a knight of some renown named Grief found him asleep and woke him up, with a promise: that he would help him break his curse, and Myca has been traveling with him, very loyal, hoping that they would find a way to break his curse and he could be at peace.
