with your halo slippin' down

Lucien was the middle child of three, with an older brother, Dorian, five years older then he was, and a younger sister, Dawn, who was two years younger: he was the quiet one, never caused any trouble of his own, happy to spend time with his books and be dragged around on whatever trouble his siblings managed to cook up. And they were good at causing trouble.

His life was quiet. Normal. Got straight As, made his parents proud, took challenging classes and had fun with them. He was happy, and his family supportive, even when he came out when he was sixteen. They had always been close-knit and accepting, and Lucien was well aware of how lucky he was, how much of a charmed (if completely boring and unexciting, as his sister often put it) life he led.

Only, when he was seventeen, shortly after he graduated from high school, his luck ran out. He had started spending time with some of his brother's friends, the smart ones who he could talk to about various things: his brother pretty much encouraged this, because he was convinced Lucien needed more friends and to get out of the damn house for once. Besides, they were his friends, he knew them, it would be safe for a naive, clueless bookworm to hang around and nothing bad would happen. Right?

Wrong.

Lucien doesn't really remember a lot of that night very throughly. He remembers that he was hanging out with his brother's best friend, David, dinner might have been involved somewhere. He certainly wasn't drinking to his knowledge, seventeen was too young to drink and he didn't have a false ID, but he remembers the taste of something too-sweet and it made him dizzy the first time he sipped it. He remembers being clumsy, clumsier then usual, and good-natured laughter in his ear.

He remembers waking up on David's couch with a headache and feeling as though something was very very wrong. He hurt and his shirt wasn't on right, and the feeling that he just wanted to curl up and disappear didn't go away even after the headache did, it only got worse, especially after his brother came to get him and wanted to know if he'd taken good care of his little brother after he'd gotten sick last night and David patted Lucien on the head and said that he'd had.

Really, Lucien doesn't remember the rest of that summer very well, as he suffered a nervous breakdown some time after that. Not until he wandered into the new bookstore, looking for something, maybe something to explain everything, or anything, and the girl behind the counter smiled at him and said, "I think I can help you find what you're looking for."

In a way, she was right, because despite everything, despite even her "help", and the group he joined because of her gentle insistence, he found what he had been looking for his whole life without even knowing he was looking for it. Without knowing it, he had fallen right into one of the Labyrinths of the Guardians of the Veil, one of the "secret societies" designed to prevent people from Awakening...and despite their efforts to keep him from the truth, he unconsciously sought it nonetheless. Until, at last, he fell sick, and in his fevered dreams spun riddles, puzzles, that seemingly had no answer, that were impossible to solve, but that he needed to solve.

Then, in a moment, everything came together. Lucien understood.

And he will not allow himself to be lied to again, if he can help it.

and not to pull your halo down

Lucien, as a teenager, was awkward and kind of geeky, with big glasses and downcast eyes, but behind that surface, he was pretty, would be prettier still when he grew up. As an adult, he has gained some measure of grace, traded his clunky glasses for slim, wire-frame ones, and has grown into that adolescent promise...except that he's still small and still slight, and tends to wear clothes that while not fashion disasters, are not flattering on him. Perhaps this is on purpose, perhaps on accident: it's very difficult to tell with him.

He wears his dark hair cut neatly, longish and his bangs falling into his eyes, and rarely smiles.

so glad to see you well
