List Description

The following contains a list of the PGA Tour events I look forward to most. The list names the golf courses, not the event itself, for two reasons. First, the events change their names all the time. Second, the reason I may enjoy a tournament has mostly to do with enjoying the way the course looks and plays. For this reason too, I may list only one course from a multi-course tournament, or I could list multiple courses from the same tournament. It's more about the course than the event. The 2007 tournament name is given in parentheses.

For purposes of this list, I did not consider the U.S. Open, PGA Championship, or The Open Championship, since the venue is not the same from year to year. The Masters was eligible for the list.

It is also important to note that I do 99% of my golf watching on network TV, so some very good events on very good courses (like the Mercedes at Kapalua) wouldn't likely make my list because I simply don't have a chance to watch them.

List

  1. Augusta National (The Masters Tournament)
  2. The TPC at Scottsdale (FBR Open)
  3. Pebble Beach (AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am)
  4. Muirfield Village (The Memorial Tournament)
  5. Doral (World Golf Championships - CA Championship)
  6. The TPC at Sawgrass (The Players Championship)
  7. Quail Hollow (The Wachovia Championship)
  8. Torrey Pines (Buick Invitational)
  9. Cog Hill Golf & Country Club (BMW Championship)
  10. East Lake (The TOUR Championship)

Offlist But Worthy Of Mention

Bay Hill (Arnold Palmer Invitational), Westchester Country Club (Barclays Classic), Harbour Town (Verizon Heritage), Colonial (Crowne Plaza Invitational).

Notes

Augusta is unbeatable for memorable holes and the prospects for great play or great disasters. It doesn't hurt that it's also a major. Scottsdale has a very interesting look set, as it is, in the desert, and also has some very memorable holes: the risk/reward 15th (a par 5 with an island green complex), the par 3 16th where 100,000 spectators surround the hole, and the par 4 17th that can be reached with a gutsy tee shot. Pebble Beach too has some memorable holes, like the short par 3 7th, the brutal par 3 17th, and the closing par 5 18th.
