IRC clients
in order to connect to IRC chat rooms, you must have a special program, called an IRC client. There are several IRC clients to choose from.
mIRC
mIRC is an IRC client made by microsoft for Windows, and the most popular IRC client. IT can be downloaded here. Additionally, you can find a detailed guide to setting up mIRC here.
Chatzilla
Chatzilla is an extension for firefox. The advantage of using this is that you can simply click on the links to IRC chat rooms at the top of the forum to connect. It can be installed here.
X-chat Aqua
X-chat aqua is an open-source chat client available for linux and Mac. it can be downloaded here.
Connecting
Now that you have a chat client, you'll want to get to the chat rooms. As stated earlier, if you are using Chatzilla, you can simply click the links found at the top of the forum (next to the link to this wiki), and chatzilla will launch automatically and join the chat room. If your using mirc or X-chat, there are a few steps simple steps to joining.
First you need to connect to the server the chat room is on. Nearly all nationstates chats are on espernet. to connect to it, simply enter '/server esper.net'.
Once your on espernet, the command '/join {chat name}' will connect you to a chat. So, for example, to connect to #lichentia, the regional IRC chat, you would simply type '/join #lichentia'.

This one is the main chat for the Founderless Regions Alliance.
others
lots of regions have IRC chats, and it's a great way to communicate with other regions members.
