Green Tech Shops have a way to go (8-Aug-07)

It is known that data centres consume considerable amounts of power, in fact some consume more than 40-50 times as much power than comparably sized office space. Consequently, it is no surprise that an increasing number of technology companies are publicising ways they are “greening” data centres.

If no changes are made the industry’s overall electricity consumption could double between 2006 and 2011. In order to actually reduce information technology’s strain on the electric grid it is required for them to be fully committed and do more than simply tweaking software, layout and air conditioning.

A commonly talked about effort involves virtualisation; consolidating many machines functions onto just a few computers can clearly save energy. Although this is a positive step to be taking, it is fair to say that the information technology industry will have to do much more to truly merit green credentials.
