In 1915, [[Springfield High School] put together its first football team, the Springfield High Millers, which distinguished itself by losing every game that first season despite the help of a student, Rex Putnam, who had graduated the previous spring but came back to school to lend the team a hand. He later went on to become Oregon superintendent of public instruction. [1] Eric Jones, "A History quiz for the fun of it," Springfield News, March 13, 1985, 2C.
