In 1902, Jacob W. Quackenbush built the Quackenbush Building in Eugene for his hardware store. Around 1903, a filbert orchard was planted on High Banks Road by Jacob (Duerr 1980:10).

Astronomy in this community began early in the 20th century, when a group of businessmen headed by J.W. Quackenbush purchased a telescope and built an observatory on Skinner Butte. His son was Arthur R Quackenbush.
