About 1875 John T. Craig helped found a road construction company which began the construction of what is now the McKenzie Highway. The first 35 miles was a county road; then the road became a toll road, the impost being collected at the McKenzie Bridge. John Craig perished on the summit of the mountains during the winter of 1878 while carrying the mails. A monument to him stands approximately 75 miles east of Springfield on the McKenzie Highway.
