Walter Ulbricht

Walter Ernst Paul Ulbricht (born on June, 30 1893 in Leipzig, Germany) is a German politician.

Ulbricht served in the Weltkrieg from 1915 to 1917 in Galicia on the Eastern Front, and in the Balkans. He deserted in 1917 as he had been opposed to the war from the beginning, and converting to Bolshevik valors. Imprisoned in Charleroi, he was only released in 1921, narrowly avoiding execution due to the troubles that happened in the aftermath of the French Civil War. In 1917 he became a member of the USPD after it split off from the SPD over support of Germany's participation in the Weltkrieg. After the reconciliation, Ulbricht rallied Ernst Thälmann's views and became one of the key members of the Marxist-Leninist fringe of the SPD, presenting as a candidate for South Westphalia in 1926 and 1931.
