After centuries of foreign occupation, a small Armenian national state finally gained independence amid the chaos of the disintegration of Tsarist power in 1917 - but its real independence was short lived. After the defeat of the Entente and the successful German intervention in the Russian Civil War, Armenia was arbitrarily given as a new province to the Ottoman Empire. Once under Ottoman rule social and religious repression followed quickly, resulting in massive protests and several underground movements. During the late 1920s, with the decline of the Ottoman authority over the Empire and mounting internal pressure, Armenia managed to win the position of an autonomous region, much like Libya. In 1936,

History

This short-lived peace only lasted for 8 years when the Turkish Army invaded and occupied whole of Armenia in 1926. The Ottomans' original intention of the war was to erase the First Republic of Armenia from the map completely, but after occupying the country for two years, with mounting internal tensions within the Empire, the Sublime Porte decided to accept the existence of the Armenian State, albeit as a puppet of the Empire. In June 1928, the Second Armenian Republic, headed by General Drastamat Kanayan, signed a formal peace treaty with the Ottoman Empire. By 1936, the Second Republic achieved economic and political stability, but under the surface the country remains something of a 'powder-keg' for it’s Ottoman masters.
