Proposal

I will use this page to track my progress for an issue of NassauNews.org, covering small business in the area of Hempstead that have gone above and beyond with their success. I plan to investigate the successes of several individuals that have had skyrocketing success since their starts. With a few in mind, I have begun my investigation. Wayne Chrebet, former NFL player and Hofstra alum, has obvious fame through the NFL, but now has bought out a bar on the Hempstead Turnpike and named it after himself, turning it into a sports bar and restaurant. Will Castro, owner of Unique Auto Sport, had his start on the Hempstead Turnpike, as well. He now has his own TV show on Speed TV and works on cars of the rich and famous.

After speaking to these individuals and others I may come across, I plan to take a look at other small businesses that have potential to make it big. There are many groups that support small businesses around the area, and with their help, I hope to find some places that could have the success the Mr. Chrebet and Mr. Castro have found. I hope that through interviewing these individuals, I can obtain some advice for these small businesses that are eager to get more popularity.

Information and Progress

On Monday, March 19, I will meet with Speed TV's Will Castro, owner of Unique Auto Sports, at his shop in Holbrook, NY. Castro started out small on the Hempstead Turnpike, but found success and his clients now include celebrities and professional football players on his own television show. Insight into his story could help give inspirational advice to those still in the area wishing for a similar outcome. During my visit, I hope to take pictures and video for the multimedia aspect of my report.

Wayne Chrebet, former NY Jets football player, recently purchased a bar on the Hempstead Turnpike, to turn into his own restaurant and sports bar. He is another person I hope to speak with.

Nassau County's 6th District council member, Gary Hudes, is a supporter of small businesses. I hope to seek his opinion on these individuals that have struck gold and hopefully find out some companies that he believes has the potential to make it just as big. With this step, I plan to speak with these companies.

"Owner and president of a jewelry business in Bellmore Village, Councilman Hudes has devoted a great deal of his time to help small businesses grow and prosper. Mr. Hudes recently served as president of Nassau County's largest business organization, The Nassau Council of Chamber of Commerce, which represents the interests of 6,000 small businesses. As president, he instituted a community partnership with Hofstra University that established an education program for small businesses throughout the county. As president of the Bellmore Chamber of Commerce, Hudes spearheaded a pilot program for downtown revitalization, which garnered three national awards and became the catalyst for downtown revitalization projects throughout the region. As a result of his commitment to small business, Mr. Hudes was also selected as the New York State "Small Business Advocate of the Year" by Governor George Pataki." (Gary Hudes)

With more links to investigate, I also hope to find other advocates for small businesses so I can get a better representation of what really exists in the area.
