Town Pride Need not Apply, as some Businesses Turn Their Backs on Their Borders
I plan to write an article on the boarder of Hempstead and Garden City. I will talk about businesses who are located on the border, or in Hempstead that say they are in Garden City. I will attempt to find the motivation for this and find out just how widespread this is.
Information
I already know the mall and the Cradle of Aviation classify themselves in different areas then they are technically located. Maggie has also tipped me off that an article written in the Hofstra Chronicle sparked a letter from a Coalition in Uniondale, that I have yet been unable to identify. I will go to the chronicle office and find her article. First step will be to define Hempstead. After research on the Nassau County Website, I have learned that there are three Hempsteads. There is a town, city and village. The first step is to find out which one I want to talk about, and the borders for each. I have contacted the Village of Hempstead, and left voice mails for the town and city. The operator who answered from the village of Hempstead said he may be able to provide maps of county lines at the village's firehouse during normal visiting hours. The firehouse is located at 74 Clinton Road. I was asked to come during the hours of 7:45 am to 4:15 pm. The next step after defining the borders is to drive along them looking at storefronts and offices, trying to find anomalies where the ownership is Hempstead, and the location lists itself as Garden City. I will also attempt to contact Garden City and Hempstead officials to get comment, (taped) on why a business or store might put Garden City's name. I suspect this is because of higher property values or better name recognition.
