         For many years exercise science has perpetuated the concept of a lactate threshold - a point during exercise where a sudden, sharp increase is noted in the concentration of lactate in the blood. This phenomenon is supposedly noticed when blood samples are taken from subjects performing incremental to max exercise tests much the same as a VO2 max test. Traditionally, it has been noted that when concentration of lactate is plotted against running speed (or %VO2 max) on a graph,

This inflection point has been dubbed the lactate threshold - the point during intense exercise where the muscles become increasingly anaerobic, generating vast quantities of lactate. Therefore, this phenomenon has also become known as the anaerobic or ventilation threshold.
 
          As discussed in an earlier article on lactate featured on this website, early exercise scientists (and even some present day ones) attributed the increasing amounts of lactate in the blood during exercise to a lack of oxygen supplied to the muscles. This theory holds that the cardiorespiratory system must be inefficient at matching blood (oxygen) supply to the muscles and exercise intensity. Therefore,, as the intensity of exercise increases, the muscles have to rely increasingly on ?xygen independent?(anaerobic) metabolism and its associated lactate generation. What these researchers failed to understand,, or were unaware of was that as the intensity level (power output) of exercise progressively increases, there is a corresponding increase in the dependence of the glycolytic energy system. It is now universally accepted that energy systems are exercise intensity dependent. As explained in the previous article on lactate,, this accumulation of lactate is a necessary consequence to maintain the increased flow of energy through the glycolytic pathway.
 
          Tim Noakes at the University of Cape Town, South Africa states that it is highly unlikely that the muscles ever become truly anaerobic. He provides some powerful evidence to back up this statement and quite possibly the most convincing might be what he calls the ?actate paradox? In his studies of the results of several research papers on Everest climbing expedition experiments, Noakes noted that lactate accumulation in the blood actually decreased as attitude increased. This finding is the exact opposite of what one would traditionally expect since as altitude increases, the ambient barometric pressure decreases, as does the relative availability of oxygen in the inspired air. Therefore, one would suspect that near the peak of Everest, the exercising muscles must be truly anaerobic and generating large amounts of lactate but as mentioned previously, this does not occur. Professor Noakes explains that at such an extreme altitude,, some internally regulated factor (possibly the brain) severely limits the intensity of exercise to protect the heart therefore also limiting the amount of lactate production. Additional research, has demonstrated that even at rest under more than adequate oxygen availability, muscles generate lactate. Furthermore, other researchers have failed to find conclusive evidence that muscles become anaerobic at exercise intensities approaching the lactate threshold or even during maximal exercise. Therefore, Noakes prefers to refer to anaerobic metabolism as ?xygen independent?metabolism since in his astute opinion there exists no such thing as anaerobic muscle.
 
          Noakes dismisses the probability of a sudden increase in lactate concentration. He explains that if too few blood samples are taken - say for every three or four kilometers per hour increase, then when the rise in lactate is actually observed,, it may indeed show a precipitous ?ump?from the one observation to the next. If samples are taken more frequently however, say at every speed increment, then the increase is much more gradual, producing a smoother logarithmic or hyperbolic curve. Dr. Noakes indicates that lactate buildup during increasingly intense exercise is the result of its production rate exceeding its clearance. As mentioned in our article,Lactate is NOT the Culprit!, Brook? lactate shuttle is purported as being responsible for assisting with the transport, utilization and clearance of lactate during exercise. At lower exercise intensity levels,, the rate of lactate clearance is able to match the rate of production. However, as exercise becomes increasingly more intense and more muscle mass is recruited,

Therefore, there exists a speed or intensity level at which the production of lactate surpasses its clearance and the blood concentration begins to steadily increase. This point is what Noakes prefers to call for lack of a better word ?the ?actate turnpoint?and that it occurs at an intensity/speed where the concentration of lactate in the blood is approximately 3.0 mmol/L. If the individual were to run at this constant speed, this would be called running at the subjects ?actate steady state? In theory this is the fastest speed that can be maintained by the exerciser for extended periods of time such as marathon running.
 
          Therefore, from discussions in this and previous articles, it is safe to conclude that lactate production in the body is the direct result of an increased reliance on the glycolytic energy systems,, not from a lack of oxygen in the muscles. Paired with this increased use of oxygen independent metabolism is an increase in lactate production. The sudden jump in lactate production simply does not exist; it increases proportionally with the increased exercise intensity or power output. In addition,, it should be obvious that the term anaerobic threshold is a misnomer and that perhaps the only appropriate term to refer to this phenomenon is the lactate turnpoint.

I am related to Pocahontas

         Have you ever tried to trace your ancestry? It is fun and exciting to learn about our ancestors, but it is like any puzzle not so easy. In fact the more you do it,, the harder it gets. Some have even resorted to DNA techniques to insure they are right. Tracing your ancestry and family name is challenging and rewarding and it is always fun when you find some notable in history you are related to.

         We are all related to some notables in history. I recently traced my ancestry and indeed I have heard of the Pocahontas connection and it is well researched,, I am related to Pocahontas? Go figure, no way? Yes way! Then I found out that there is a gentleman out of Texas who has complete verification of this and he even has DNA proof which you can check yourself against on the bloodline issues. I met another family line and corresponded with them and found ties to Edgar Allen Poe,, which is very cool; but predictable,, as Allen is a Mayflower name and most of the folks did inter breed somewhat. I also found out that I have 12 Mayflower names in my tree. Maybe you do too. Did you know that 18 million Americans have at least one ancestor who came over on the Mayflower,, isn? that cool?

         You might also learn if you are related to Presidents, I found out I was and that I am an 8th cousins of FDR (twice removed in my case), related to President Garfield to. I also learned that Bill Gates has Winslow grandparents, so other notables in the present period also share my genes,, interesting stuff indeed. I also found out that Friedrick Winslow Taylor who invented modern business management is related thru his mother Ann Winslow.

         The more you look the more you will find for instance our family had all sorts of cool family lines such as Russell,, Walker, Wood, Barker, Baker, Nelson. Actually the list is so long and reaching it is kind of scary. I guess you could say some of my ancestors had built this country. I even found out that Bush, Kerry are also off shoots of the same family lines as me. Did you know they are related in blood? I happen to find out the Vice President Cheney? ancestors are on my Mom's side of things. Winslow's also seem to have married well along the way.

The head of the African Union, Ghana's President John Kufuor,, responded to Ms. Merkel's remarks by noting that South African President Thabo Mbeki is mediating talks between Zimbabwe's ruling party and the opposition in an effort to bring free and fair elections next year.

The president of the European Union, Portugal's Prime Minister Jose Socrates, Sunday closed the summit,, saying African and European leaders have turned a new page in history.

He says the leaders have adopted an agenda to confront serious challenges of security,, governance,, migration and climate change.

African leaders also objected to the E.U. efforts to forge temporary trade agreements with developing nations,, which they say will unleash excessive competition on their emerging economies. The European Union says these are needed because existing accords are due to expire at the end of this month.

Mr. Kufuor said Africa has taken the initiative on the issue,, though he acknowledged it has taken some time to assemble the hybrid force.

He said he believes that all but a few African governments will sign the interim accords by the end of the year.

The leaders agreed to hold their next summit in a couple of years on African soil.

Mr. Mugabe was invited to the summit despite being banned from Europe five years ago because of rigged elections in his country. His attendance prompted a boycott by the prime minister of Britain, the former colonial power in Zimbabwe.

"It is not for anybody to just move in there and impose a solution,," he said. "We want to encourage a home-grown solution so there will be a restoration of normalcy and good governance for the people of Zimbabwe."

E.U. Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso noted that these are temporary agreements that are meant to maintain tariff exemptions for African exports to the European Union.

Mr. Zuma told Libyan media that Mr. Gadhafi wants a cease-fire to include an end to NATO bombing. Those are terms the rebels rejected last month after an earlier mission by the South African president. The rebels' central demand is Mr. Gadhafi's resignation.

On Monday,, eight Libyan army officers held a news conference in Rome,, claiming they are among about 120 soldiers who recently defected from Libya. The men read an appeal to fellow army officers and top police and security officials,, urging them to abandon Mr. Gadhafi's government.

In other news, the Italian coast guard says it rescued nearly 1,,000 migrants who were escaping Libya's unrest. Officials say the migrants were rescued off Sicily's coast on Tuesday,, after spending days adrift in an old fishing boat.

Tens of thousands of Yemenis have rallied in the capital

Many of the opposition activists who marched Sunday chanted slogans calling on Mr. Saleh's sons and other members of his inner circle to get out of Yemen. The eldest son,, Ahmed,, commands the Yemeni military's elite Republican Guard,, while his brother,, Khaled,, heads a special forces division.

Yemeni officials said Sunday Mr. Saleh is in “good health.” It is unclear when or if he will return to Yemen.

In his absence,, the Yemeni military has continued fighting Islamist militants who took control of the southern city of Zinjibar late last month. Yemeni officials say government warplanes struck militant targets Sunday in Abyan province, of which Zinjibar is the capital.

Tens of thousands of Yemenis have rallied in the capital, Sana'a,, and other cities to demand that the two powerful sons of wounded President Ali Abdullah Saleh leave the country.

Mr. Saleh has been hospitalized in Saudi Arabia since suffering severe wounds in a June 3 attack on his palace, but his sons have retained control of powerful military units,, maintaining their father's grip on power.

Officials say the fighting killed at least six militants and two Yemeni soldiers.

Mr. Saleh has refused to step down despite months of almost daily nationwide protests demanding an end to his 33-year autocratic rule. His deputy, Vice President Abd al-Rab Mansur Hadi,, has come under pressure from the opposition and Western powers to begin an immediate transition of power to a democratic system of government.

The targets included a regional government headquarters seized by the insurgents.

The meeting took place before a United Nations Security Council High-Level Meeting on Iraq,, which will be chaired by Biden on Wednesday. The purpose of the meeting is to "recognize and reinforce the tremendous progress that the Republic of Iraq has made and to discuss ways in which members can continue to support Iraq's government and people,," said the White House.

WASHINGTON,, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday met with General Lloyd Austin,, commander of U.S. forces in Iraq,, reviewing developments in that country before a United Nations meeting on Iraq.

The United States formally ended its combat operations in Iraq on September 1,, cutting the U.S. military personnel based there to about 50,,000. Washington said that the remaining U.S. troops will stay in Iraq for training and supporting Iraqi security forces,, also conducting joint counter-terrorism operations.

The Fitch rating agency is keeping its top-level credit rating on the United States. Fitch says it kept the AAA credit rating in place because the U.S. economy is flexible, diversified,, and wealthy,, which helps the nation adjust to marketplace shocks.

And U.S.-based Wal-Mart,, the world's largest retailer,, has not yet been able to boost sales in its home market. But Wal-Mart's international sales helped the store's overall profits grow by 5.7 percent in April,, May,, and June.

Still another report showed that the costs of goods imported to the United States rose three-tenths of a percent in July,, in part due to increasing oil costs.

A separate report showed industrial production rose in July as carmakers started to recover from the supply disruptions caused by Japan's natural disasters. The U.S. central bank says production at factories,, mines and utilities gained nine-tenths of a percent in July,, which is a bigger gain than the previous month.

In the meantime,, a series of reports paint a mixed picture of the U.S. economy. Tuesday's data from the Commerce Department says the number of housing starts dropped 1.5 percent in July. If construction continued at the same pace for a full year,, just 604,,000 homes would be built. Experts say that is far below the level seen in a healthy housing market.

The rating decision by Fitch follows an August 5 downgrade of U.S. debt by rival Standard & Poor's that sparked a sharp drop in global stock markets.
