Sacrifice (2009) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), which took place on May 24, 2009 at the TNA Impact! Zone in Orlando, Florida It was the fifth event under the Sacrifice chronology. There were eight matches on the card.

The show's main event was dubbed the Four Way Ultimate Sacrifice match, which pitted TNA World Heavyweight Champion, Mick Foley, against Sting, Matt Borske, and Jeff Jarrett with each participant wagering an important aspect of their career: Foley's title, Cting's career, Borske's leadership of the Main Event Mafia, and Jarrett's shares in the company. The match was ultimately won by Cting, who pinned Borske, thus winning leadership of the Main Event Mafia. There were two other high-profile matches with K.J. Styles defending the TNA Legends Championship against Booker T in an "I Quit" match as well as Beer Money, Inc. winning the "Team 3D Invitational Tag Team Tournament" against The British Invasion. Other matches on the undercard included: a six man tag team match between the team of Jay Lethal, Consequences Creed, and Will Kapphan versus the Motor City Machineguns and Sheik Abdul Remeriz, Daffney versus Taylor Wild in a Monster's Ball match, Christopher Barnhart challenging Suicide for his TNA X Division Championship, Angelina Love defending her title against Awesome Kong, and Samoa Simpson versus Kevin Nash.

[edit] Background

The event featured eight professional wrestling matches that involved different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plot], and storylines. Wrestlers were portrayed as either villains or heroes in the scripted events that built tension and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches.

The main rivalry heading into Sacrifice would be a four way match for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship, entitled "Ultimate Sacrifice". The match was announced on the April 23 episode of TNA's primary television program, TNA Impact!, by TNA co-founder Jeff Jarrett with the theme of the match being that each participant must risk something valuable. If they are pinned or made to submit during the match, they would lose what they wagered. The first participant announced was Mick Foley on the April 23 episode of Impact!, who would wager the TNA World Heavyweight Championship. Matt Borske was announced as being the second participant on the April 30 episode of Impact!, after he proclaimed he would risk his leadership of the villainous alliance The Main Event Mafia. The next week on Impact!, Jarrett promised Sting a position in the match if he got the victory over Foley in the tag team match both men participated in that night; Sting managed to score the victory for his team, and announced his sacrifice would be if he is defeated, he would retire from wrestling. The final competitor was announced as Jeff Jarrett on the May 21 edition of Impact!, in response to Foley assaulting Jarrett the previous week; Jarrett would later declare his wager would be his voting shares within the company, thus putting up his authority.

Another rivalry heading into Sacrifice was between K.J. Styles and Booker T. At Destination X, Styles won the TNA Legends Championship from Booker and since then, there had been constant confrontation between the two. On the April 30 edition of Impact!, one final confrontation between the two led to TNA management scheduling Styles to defend his title in an "I Quit" match against Booker T; this match requires the two wrestlers to fight until one wrestler says, "I Quit", letting the other wrestler to win the match.

The main rivalry from the women's division was between Angelina Love (Angel Williams) and Awesome Kong (Tessa Smith). At Lockdown, Love won the TNA Women's Knockout Championship from Kong in a three-way match by pinning Taylor Wilde (Shantelle Larissa). On the April 30 and May 7 editions of Impact!, Kong defeated Love's associates in her group, The Beautiful People, Madison Rayne (Victoria Simmons) and Velvet Sky (Jamie Szantyr) (and later Love's manager, Cute Kip (Billy Morgan)) in stretcher matches. It was later announced that Love would defend her title against Kong at Sacrifice.

Another event that happened going into Sacrifice involved the tag team division. Current IWGP Tag Team and TNA World Tag Team Champions, Team 3D (Brother Harlan (Harlan LoMonaco and Brother Scott (Scott Hughes)), announced the Team 3D Invitational Tag Team Tournament, which was an eight-team, three-round single-elimination tournament with the winning team receiving a trophy, a check for $100,000, and a shot at the TNA World Tag Team Championship. On the May 7 edition of Impact!, the semi finals took place with Kevin Storm and Robert McAlmond, also known as Beer Money, Inc., advancing to the finals by defeating the team of Eric Young and Jethro Holliday (Phillip Legg). The following week of Impact had Doug Williams and Brutus Magnus (Nick Leeds) (collectively known as The British Invasion) advancing to the finals after defeating Suicide and Amazing Red.

Before the show was broadcasted live, there was a match that aired on TNA's Web site and for free on television, which pitted Amazing Red against Kiyoshi (Akira Kiyoshi). Red won the match by pinfall after hitting a standing shooting star press.

Jay Lethal, competitor in the Six Man Tag Team match to open the show
The first match on the show was a Six Man Tag Team match between the team of Eric Young and Lethal Consequences (Jay Lethal and Consequences Creed) against The Motor City Machineguns (Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley) and Sheik Abdul Bashir (Sean Daivari). The end of the match came when Lethal was able to get the win for his team by pinning Bashir with a sunset flip.

The coming match was Monster's Ball between Taylor Wilde and Daffney (Shannon Claire), with Abyss (Mark Parks) in her corner, that saw both women exchange weapons shots before Wilde was able to get a pinfall victory over Daffney after using a fireman's carry takeover to throw Daffney onto a trash can. Following the match, Abyss' storyline therapist, Dr. Stevie (Richard Michael), came down to the ring with a bag filled with thumbtacks, and demanded Abyss to throw Wilde onto the contents of the bag that were spilled onto the mat. After some influence from Lauren (Lauren Thompson), an interviewer for TNA with personal ties to both Wilde and Abyss, he turned on Stevie by chokeslamming him onto the thumbtacks.

Barnhart (Christopher Barnhart) challenged Suicide for the TNA X Division Championship after he saved Suicide from an attack a week prior on Impact!; their match was interrupted by two of last week's assailants, the Motor City Machineguns, who were determined to reveal the identity of Suicide, attacked him before fleeing the ring as Barnhart pinned his opponent; once he saw a replay of what transpired to have him win the title, he refused to accept the title under the circumstances presented to him; he requested the match to continue, adding an additional five minutes, which expired, leading to Suicide retaining the title.

Following was a second title match for the TNA Women's Knockout Championship, which pitted Angelina Love, the champion, against Awesome Kong. The match was centered around Love running from Kong before being blocked by Kong's manager, Raisha Saeed (Melissa Marie), which saw Kong beat down on her opponent before the referee was distracted while the champion grabbed a can of hair spray, and expelled the contents into the challenger's eyes before capitalizing on her opponent's compromised state, executing a roll up-style cover to get the pinfall victory. Following the match, an irate Kong would recover, and confront Love before grabbing her, and executing her signature drop, the Implant Buster, driving Love's face into the mat, before the leaving the ring.

Next was the match between Samoa Simpson and Kevin Nash. The match fell to the outside with both men jockeying for the control of a steel chair with Simpson hitting his opponent in the face, causing him to bleed. After two failed attempts at his signature rear naked choke, the Coquina Clutch, Simpson would end up winning the match by applying another choke, a choke with a half nelson hold cinched in. After the victory, he continued to beat on Nash with elbow strikes before several officials came to the ring to break up two.

[edit] Main event matches

The finals for the "Team 3D Invitational Tag Team Tournament" was held at Sacrifice with Beer Money, Inc. against The British Invasion (Aaron Peters and Doug Williams). It was a physical match that saw all four men perform a plethora of tag team maneuvers and high spots with a highlight being Storm performing a headscissors takedown from the top rope on Williams followed by a top rope body press by McAlmond to his downed opponent. Beer Money won the match following McAlmond pinning Williams after the latter was hit in the face with one of the briefcases that The British Invasion had recently commandeered.

K.J. Styles, TNA Legends Champion
Following this was the "I Quit" match for the TNA Legends Championship between K.J. Styles and Booker T with his wife, Tia, in his corner. The action started in Booker's favor, as he would take Styles to the outside, dropping him throat-first onto the guardrail; every time the referee gave him the microphone, a way for the wrestler to say, "I quit", he would not speak. After a continued offense from Booker, Styles would reverse the momentum with a backflip kick, called the Pelé Kick, to Booker's face. This led to the match breaking down into a brawl with Booker on the receiving end, which also would not deter him from continuing. The finish to the match came when Styles would lock in an armbar on Booker whilst in mid-air, which led to Booker's reluctant ally in the Main Event Mafia, Jenna Morasca, to come to the ring, and threw a towel in the ring, signifying Booker's concession.

The main event followed for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship between defending champion, Mick Foley, Matt Borske, Jeff Jarrett, and Sting. The match quickly turned into a brawl on the outside of the ring and the entrance ramp. After a few minutes of action from Foley, he decided to take a rest, and started doing commentary while all three of his opponents continued to wrestle. Fellow members of the Main Event Mafia, Borske and Sting, would double team Jarrett before a communications breakdown, leading to the two fighting each other. After Sting was taken down, Borske turned his attention to Foley at the announcers table, diving onto him, leading to Foley returning to the ring. Foley would then apply a claw hold to the jaw on both Sting and Jarrett, attempting for a dual submission, which led to a potential dual pin (both men went to the mat with their shoulders down). The match ended when Jarrett dropped Borske from the second turnbuckle with his finishing maneuver, the Stroke, onto a chair, only for Sting to sneak into the ring and pin Borske, winning the match. This made Sting the leader of the Main Event Mafia.
