Charmed is an American supernatural fantasy drama television series created by Constance M. Burge and produced by Aaron Spelling and his production company Spelling Television, with Brad Kern serving as showrunner. The series was originally broadcast by The WB for eight seasons from October 7, 1998, until May 21, 2006. The series narrative follows a trio of sisters, known as The Charmed Ones, the most powerful good Witcheswitches of all time, who use their combined "Power of Three" to protect innocent lives from evil beings such as demons and warlocks. Each sister possesses unique magical powers that grow and evolve, while they attempt to maintain normal lives in modern-day San Francisco. Keeping their supernatural identities separate and secret from their ordinary lives often becomes a challenge for them, with the exposure of magic having far-reaching consequences on their various relationships and resulting in a number of police and FBI investigations throughout the series. The series initially focuses on the three Halliwell sisters, Prue (Shannen Doherty), Piper (Holly Marie Combs), and Phoebe (Alyssa Milano). Following Prue's death in the third-season finale, their long-lost half sister Paige Matthews (Rose McGowan) assumes her place within the "Power of Three" from season four onwards.
Charmed achieved a cult following and popularity on The WB with its first episode "Something Wicca This Way Comes" garnering 7.7 million viewers, breaking the record for the network's highest-rated debut episode. The show's ratings, although smaller than rival shows on the "big four" networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox), were a success for the relatively new and smaller WB network. Charmed went through several timeslot changes during its eight-season run. For its first three seasons in the Wednesday/Thursday 9:00 pm timeslot, Charmed was the second-highest rated series on The WB, behind 7th Heaven. During its fifth season, the show moved to the Sunday 8:00 pm timeslot, where it became the highest-rated Sunday night program in The WB's history. At 178 episodes, Charmed was the second-longest drama broadcast by The WB, behind 7th Heaven. In 2006, it became the longest running hour-long television series featuring all female leads, before being surpassed by Desperate Housewives in 2012.
The series has also received numerous awards and nominations. In 2010, The Huffington Post and AOL TV ranked Charmed within their joint list of "The Top 20 Magic/Supernatural Shows of All Time," while in 2013, TV Guide listed the series as one of "The 60 Greatest Sci-Fi Shows of All Time." Charmed has also become a source of pop culture references in film and television and has influenced other succeeding television series in the same subgenre. The show's success has led to its development in other media, including a video game, board games, soundtracks, novels, and a comic book series which served as a continuation of its narrative. According to data research from The NPD Group in 2012, Charmed was the second-most binge watched television series on subscription video-on-demand services, such as Netflix. A reboot series of Charmed, featuring different cast members and characters, premiered on The CW on October 14, 2018.

This template creates a box containing between two and ten images, arranged either vertically or horizontally and with captions for the entire box or per image.
With the appropriate choice of parameters, the template can automatically resize images to a given total width with each image having the same height.
Be aware that this template does not respect users' default image size preferences. (Wikipedia:Image use policy states: Template:Tq)
If image size parameters are omitted, this template sets all images at 200px wide, regardless of whether the reader has set a preference for some other default image width. This causes multiple images to look out of scale to the other images in an article.
Syntax and parameters
Provide height[n] and total_width parameters to obtain automatic resizing. Note the different meanings of the width[n] parameters with vs. without automatic resizing.
- No automatic resizing of all images to the same height
-
Template loop detected: Template:Multiple image
- Automatic resizing of all images to the same height and to a given total width

Parameter | Description |
---|---|
align | right (default), left, center |
direction | horizontal (default), vertical |
background color | To set the background color of the box in which the images appear. |
header_background | |
header_align | center (default), left, right |
header | |
width | Use to set the same width for each image (i.e. overrides any Template:Mono below). Do not include if different image widths intended, including if images are to be resized to a fixed total width. |
total_width | Use to scale the images to the same height and this total width. Do not use both Template:Mono and Template:Mono. |
image[n] | (where [n] = 1 to 10) Filename of [n]th image. |
width[n] | (as above) Two meanings: (1) The width (in pixels, integer, omit "px") of [n]th image. Overridden by Template:Mono (if set). (2) The full width of the original [n]th image if Template:Mono is given in order to resize all images to the same height and a given total width. |
height[n] | (as above) The full height of the original [n]th image if Template:Mono is given in order to resize all images to the same height and a given total width. Ignored otherwise. |
alt[n] | (as above) Alt description for [n]th image. |
link[n] | (as above) To specify the page to which the [n]th image is linked (i.e. the page that is loaded when the image is clicked). If set as empty (e.g. Template:Mono), linking is disabled (even to the standard Wikipedia image description page); consider WP:ALT. Note: This parameter must not be used with images that have been given free licenses (such as the GDFL or a free CC license) as these licenses require images to be linked to a declaration of the license under which they are being used. |
thumbtime[n] | (as above) When using Ogg Theora files, sets the time within the video that is used for the initial display. This is either a number of seconds or hours:minutes:seconds; see commons:Commons:Video#Setting a video thumbnail image. |
caption[n] | (as above) Caption for the [n]th image. |
caption_align | left (default), center, right |
footer_background | |
footer_align | left (default), center, right |
footer | Caption that spans the entire box, as opposed to individual images. Avoid "left" and "right" if possible, since mobile devices may display the images vertically. |

Using direction
By default, the images the template presents are displayed horizontally, as a row (see left; equivalent to setting Template:Mono). To display them vertically, i.e. as a column, set Template:Mono (see right). Template loop detected: Template:Multiple image Template loop detected: Template:Multiple image
On mobile devices some images may always be displayed vertically if the total width is larger than around 320.
To match image heights
- Decide on a total width for all the images, say 320px
- Set the total width using Template:Para
Template loop detected: Template:Multiple image
{{multiple image | align = right | total_width = 320 | image1 = Donkey 1 arp 750px.jpg | alt1 = A donkey | caption1 = Rectangular image of a donkey, originally 536 pixels high. | image2 = Rainbow_trout.png | alt2 = A trout | caption2 = Square image of a trout, originally 300 pixels high. | footer = Both images have been rendered with the same height, and a total width of 320px }}
The aspect ratio of each image is automatically retrieved from the File metadata. You can override the native width and height values by
- Examining the individual image pages to obtain the full resolution. For example:
- File:Donkey 1 arp 750px.jpg shows "Donkey_1_arp_750px.jpg (750 × 536 pixels, file size: 125 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)"
- File:Rainbow trout.png shows "Rainbow_trout.png (300 × 300 pixels, file size: 158 KB, MIME type: image/png)"
- Specify the full width and height for each image, of the form:
Multiple rows
To create an array of images, with multiple rows, use Template:Para. The value passed to Template:Para may be a single number, or a list of numbers delimited by /
. This feature may also be combined with Template:Para for multiple rows of images with the same total width.
Template loop detected: Template:Multiple image
{{multiple image|perrow = 2|total_width=300 | image1 = Kern_Theodolit_DKM2-A.jpg | image2 = Total-Robotic-Station.jpg | image3 = DumpyLevel.jpg | image4 = GPS_Survey_Equipment_at_Weir_Dyke_Bridge_-_geograph.org.uk_-_336908.jpg | footer = Surveying Equipment. Clockwise from upper left: Optical Theodolite, Robotic total station, Optical level, [[Real-time kinematic | RTK]] GPS Base station. }}Template:Clear right
Removing the image border
The border around the images can be removed using Template:Para. Template loop detected: Template:Multiple image
{{multiple image | align = right | total_width = 320 | image_style = border:none; | image1 = Donkey 1 arp 750px.jpg | alt1 = A donkey | caption1 = Image of a donkey | image2 = Rainbow_trout.png | alt2 = A trout | caption2 = Image of a trout }}Template:Clear right
Increasing the gap between images
The gap between the images can be increased using Template:Para, where N is the number of pixels (must be non-negative). Template loop detected: Template:Multiple image
{{multiple image | align = right | total_width = 320 | image_gap = 20 | image1 = Donkey 1 arp 750px.jpg | alt1 = A donkey | caption1 = Image of a donkey | image2 = Rainbow_trout.png | alt2 = A trout | caption2 = Image of a trout }}Template:Clear right

- Shannen Doherty as Prue Halliwell (seasons 1–3), the eldest sister who initially receives the power to move objects with her mind by channelling telekinesis through her eyes. As the series progresses, Prue learns how to channel her telekinetic powers through her hands and gains the power of astral projection, the ability to be in two places at once. Prue also develops martial arts skills and becomes an effective hand-to-hand fighter. During her three seasons on Charmed, she is regarded as the strongest and most powerful witch of the Halliwell sisters. Prue initially works as an appraiser for an auction house, and later becomes a professional photographer for a magazine company. In the season three finale, she is killed by Shax (Michael Bailey Smith), a powerful demonic assassin sent by The Source of All Evil.
- Holly Marie Combs as Piper Halliwell, the second eldest sister who initially receives the power to freeze her surrounding environment. As the series progresses, she also gains the power to cause evil beings or objects to spontaneously explode. Piper is initially the middle sister of the family during the first three seasons, but later becomes the eldest sister after Prue dies. Piper's central love interest throughout the series is Leo Wyatt (Brian Krause), the sisters' whitelighter – a guardian angel for good witches. In season three, she marries Leo, and as the series progresses, they have two children; Wyatt (born in season five) and Chris (born in season six). Piper initially works as a chef and manager for the restaurant Quake, but from season two onwards, she becomes the owner and manager of the nightclub P3.
- Alyssa Milano as Phoebe Halliwell, the third eldest sister who initially receives the power of premonition, the ability to see into the future and the past. To make up for initially only having a passive power, Phoebe develops martial arts skills in order to better assist her sisters when they fight evil. As the series progresses, she also gains the active powers of levitation and empathy. Phoebe is introduced into Charmed as the youngest and most rebellious of the Halliwell sisters. However, her progression as a witch helps her become more responsible and grow as a person. Phoebe later becomes the middle sister after Prue dies and the series introduces their younger half-sister Paige (Rose McGowan). Phoebe was initially a college student for the first few seasons, and later becomes an advice columnist for the newspaper company The Bay Mirror.
- Rose McGowan as Paige Matthews (seasons 4–8), the youngest half-sister who initially receives the power to move objects with her mind by orbing ("teleporting") objects from one location to another through a vocal command. She was the secret love child of the Halliwell sisters' mother Patty (Finola Hughes) and her whitelighter Sam Wilder (Scott Jaeck), making Paige both a witch and whitelighter. She was given up at birth and raised by her adoptive parents. Paige is introduced upon Prue's funeral at the beginning of season four, where she goes on to help reconstitute The Charmed Ones by taking Prue's place in the "Power of Three". As the series progresses, Paige also receives the whitelighter powers of orbing herself and others, as well as sensing, glamouring, and healing.
