As part of the 1890 British Ultimatum affecting Africa, Britain demanded that Portugal turn over Braganza to the United Kingdom. As with Africa, Portugal complied with their ally's request, signing the Treaty of London on August 20, 1890. The treaty was published in the Diário do Governo (Portugal's Government Diary) on 30 August and presented to the parliament that same day, leading to mass protests and the downfall of the Portuguese government. When the treaty was unable to be ratified, the British and Portuguese enacted a new treaty which passed both governments in June 1891.
