History

Carife was originally a roman trading outpost, and then became the center of San Pedro's new kingdom. When the Moors invaded San Pedro they captured Carife only for a few years, and then it was recaptured by armies in Lepanto.

The Great Earthquake

In 1765, a huge earthquake shook the city. After the earthquake fires ravaged through the city and a tsunami ensued as well. Almost 80% of the city was destroyed, and was rebuilt with the help of the leader Marques de Pumba.

Old Carife consists of the Cathedral, Plaza Mayor, Church of the Assumption, and Basilica of Santa Maria de los Buenos Aires. There is also the Plaza de Triunfo, which was a post-earthquake addition.

The New town consists mostly of 18th-19th architecture similar to 18th century Parisian buildings.
