In 1765, a huge earthquake shook the city. After the earthquake fires ravaged through the city and a tsunami ensued as well. Almost 80% of the city was destroyed, and was rebuilt with the help of the leader Marcos de Pumba.

Buroughs

Carifa Vieja

Old Carife consists of the Cathedral, Plaza Mayor, Church of the Assumption, and Basilica of Santa Maria de los Buenos Aires. There is also the Plaza de Triunfo, which was a post-earthquake addition.

New Town

The New town consists mostly of 18th-19th architecture similar to 18th century Parisian buildings.
