A quick guide to the Preferences page.

User Profile
| Object | Description |
|---|---|
| Username | Obvious. |
| User ID | Unique Identification Number of your account. Used in account identification (as Username can change) |
| Real name | Something about "attribution for your work," whatever that means. |
| Allows you to use the functions described in the email section. | |
| Nickname | Name used when you sign your messages on talk pages. If you check the box below it, you can create a custom signature. |
| Language | I shouldn't have to explain this one. |
| Change Password | Pretty self-explanatory. |
| If you specify an address in the E-mail field, you can use these features. |
Skin
This tab doesn't need much explanation. The only thing to note is "MySkin," which is a personal skin that you can create by editing Special:Mypage/myskin.css and Special:Mypage/myskin.js.
Files
Specify how big you want thumbnails and images to be.
Date and time
Set how you want the date to look and what time the server should give you.
Editing
Use "Rows" and "Columns" to adjust the size of the editing field. The boxes below are just different options that have to do with editing.
Recent changes
Not sure what "Titles in recent changes" means.
"Hide minor edits in recent changes" hides edits marked with an "m".
"Enhanced recent changes" enhances it a bit, but makes it hard to read.
Search
Hits per page = Search results per page.
Lines per hit = Max amount of lines from which it found the keyword(s), per result.
Context per line = Line length.
Misc
Not sure what "Threshold for stub display" means, but the rest is self-explanatory.
