• Asian Cultural Council Programs:

-- Targeted Fields: Humanities. School of Arts and Architecture. School of Theater, Film, & TV. Grants are made in the following fields: archaeology, architecture (design, theory, and history), art history, art and architectural conservation, crafts, dance, film, musicology, music, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, theater, and video.

-- Open To Prospective/Current Graduate Students. Students Working on Master's Thesis. Students Working on Doctoral Dissertation. Postdoctoral Scholars.

-- Citizenship: American applicants must either be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Applicants from Asia need to have either a J1 or F1 visa.

-- Eligibility Requirements: Applicant must either be enrolled or graduated from graduate school. Out of the applicants from Asia, priority will be given to those who have not had the opportunity to study in the United States.

-- Grants vary by fellowship and can range between $500-$30,000.

-- Deadline: 11/15/2010 - Letter of Inquiry Deadline is 10/15/2010

-- Program Description: Approximately 140-150 grants are offered annually to support the cultural exchange between Asia and the United States in the performing and visual arts. Around 80-90 grants are offered to scholars, students, and specialists from Asia for study, research, travel, and creative work in the United States. Around 20 grants are also awarded to Americans engaged in similar activities in Asia and to arts organizations and educational institutions for specific projects of particular significance to Asian-American cultural exchange. In addition, the Council awards a small number of grants in support of regional exchange activities within Asia.

• Asian Art and Religion Fellowships:

-- SYNOPSIS: Support is provided to enable American scholars, specialists, and artists to conduct research and undertake projects in Asia involving the interdisciplinary analysis of religion and the arts. The sponsor awards up to five research fellowships or travel grants each year through this program.

-- DEADLINE NOTE: Letters of inquiry must be received by October 15th. The deadline for receipt of completed applications and proposals is November 15, 2010.

-- OBJECTIVES: This fellowship program focuses on the relationship between the artistic and religious traditions of Asia. The program enables American scholars, specialists, and artists to conduct research and undertake projects in Asia involving the interdisciplinary analysis of religion and the arts. Asian Art and Religion Fellowships have supported research in India on the iconography of Hindu deities, in Indonesia on the relationship between tantric religious thought and masked performance, and in Thailand on Buddhist architecture of northern Thailand.

• Targeted Research Areas Grants

-- SYNOPSIS: The sponsor provides an award of up to $4,000 (which may be split among more than one award) to support specific projects by scholars working in areas important to ASTR's mission that are currently under-represented in its various activities.

-- OBJECTIVES: This grant is intended to support specific projects by scholars working in areas important to ASTR's mission that are currently under-represented in its various activities. Such areas include, but are not limited to, the following: pre-1900 research; Asian, African, Latin American, and Middle Eastern theatre, dance, and performance; little known repertoires. Translations of important theatre documents, including plays, will also be considered. This award is not intended to support curriculum development.

-- ELIGIBILITY: Any independent, tenured, or untenured scholar who is currently a member of ASTR and holds a terminal degree, or any graduate student who is applying in support of a project that is not directly related to her/his dissertation, is eligible to apply. Rank and institutional affiliation are not considered. Applicants may not apply for a Targeted Research Area Grant and for a Research Fellowship for the same project in the same year. </p>

-- FUNDING: The award provides a grant of up to $4000 total per annum (which may be split among more than one award). Recipients are encouraged to submit their resulting work, if appropriate, to Theatre Survey and to liaise with the editors as the project develops.
