Nutshell
Ashford is the Hogwarts groundskeeper. He is 69 years old. He is Muggle born and he doesn't like you.
Appearance
He is frail-looking, though he is anything but that. His thin white hair is a strong contrast to his thick eyebrows. His eyes are a grayish hazel color, and usually hold a cold gaze. A sour sneer contorts his wrinkly face in a rather unpleasant way. He has a long, slightly crooked nose.
He has a very intimidating low voice. He can adjust it from a sinister whisper to an omnipotent bellow.
Do not be fooled by his old age because Ashford has been known to chase down troublemakers on foot. He's surprisingly quick for his age, but the pains of age will catch up with him after the chase is over. When his legs aren't fast enough, he'll stop kids dead in their tracks with a flick of his wand.
Personality
He's grumpy... very grumpy, cynical, and bitter. If you cross his path, you will be jinxed, if you talk back, you will be hexed, and if you are just standing there quietly, you will receive a detention for being in his way. He hates people, especially kids.
Ashford is quite generally a very unpleasant person. He has a very quick temper. He finds that basically everything is there solely to bother him. There are few, if any, people he gets along with. He finds outgoing people too loud and distracting. He finds shy people cowardly. He finds brave, heroic people stupid and reckless. He thinks that intelligent people are just smart-asses.
He hates the rest of the human race so much that he's turned into a bit of a sadist. He'll often put students to hard work during detention. He's even been caught using jinxes to punish students.
Ashford doesn't think of himself as a grumpy old man, however. He likes to think that he is a keeper of law and order. He is a strict disciplinarian and considers himself to be the force that keeps hooligans out of trouble. He believes that he ever child should live the way he did as a child, away from trouble. As a student, he was jealous of the kids who could slip out of trouble again and again and still be promoted to prefects. The feelings still hold true today, because if he catches a student causing mischief then he will personally try to make their life a living hell.
His temper makes for such a good show students often go out of their way to give Ashford a hard time in particular. He has an extra fiery hatred for these students.
Imagine a bad, bruised apple, rolled in a tootsie roll that got hard and crunchy, covered in prune juice, dropped in a pile of melted down, rusty old cars, and then shoved through a fire place so it gets all hard and petrified... That's essentially his heart.
History
He was once a Sytherin student, and a very good and obiediant one. However, he was never recognized for his hard efforts. He became very cynical and negative.
After he graduated from Hogwarts he worked at the Ministry of Magic. However, he did not have the skill or charisma to move up the bureaucratic ladder. Relationships never lasted partially due to his negativity. It wasn't enough to make him change his ways, but instead he grew angrier at the world.
Giving up on his career after less then a decade, he returned to Hogwarts, this time as a groundskeeper. He has stayed there ever since.
