The Helsinki Times Project

Already long before February 2003, when http://www.helsinkitimes.net was registered, the idea of a daily English Language newspaper called Helsinki Times for the Metropolitan area in the south of Finland was conceived. It's creator went by the name of oobio, an alternate identity for the editor-in-chief of Helsinki Times, initially created by Rockfield Communications.

From March 2004 until May 2007 only an electronic version Helsinki Times existed only on internet.

Since may 2007 publisher Dreamcatcher Oy has initiated a professional launch of a printed version of Helsinki Times, staffed with professional journalists.

Newspapers, journalists and bloggers see themselves confronted with some the most divine of dilemma's in the western world today: What will the future of media consumption look like, what is or should the role of technology be taking in our daily lives, and what are the effects of citizen journalism on traditional media outlets?

That perhaps is the main question that oobio tries to answer.

Web 2.0

With the impact of internet on society in general in mind, we set out to research, evaluate, test and implement the latest and greatest applications we could find from the some of the most innovative internet companies in the world.

Update: A Print version of Helsinki Times is now published in the Helsinki Metropolitan area with a weekly circulation of 15,000. (May 2007) by Dreamcatcher, see helsinkitimes.fi

It has been agreed between Dreamcatcher and Rockfield that oobio may use the original newscontent from the newspaper for his website operating under the same name, Helsinki Times.

Both companies are discussing future ways of working together to provide Finland with a reliable source of news in english from Finland. In the mean while, oobio has promised to help sell Helsinki Times subscriptions. What else is an editor-in-chief supposed to do?
