Lunchtime changes everything.

He doesn't remember running or stopping or sleeping. It was cold and wet and dark and then there was the Monk, and looking up into a sadness/person? (yes) who took him someplace warm and made him stop hurting and gave him some soup.

He remembers the man's smile and the people who were afraid, and the books and the houses and all the things and how everything was so new, but not really, because there was less of it, but it was a better less. Even before, he knew that, and they never quite believed him (he checked) but it helped, especially after lunchtime.

He remembers the expression on the man's face when that letter came, nice routine hello from your fellows that's not supposed to be a bad thing, and the warnings and the promises and the cloak to go over his horns just in case. (There was some kind of stir fry.)

That day Peace was watching, peeking out through the window and watching as the Monk went over the horizon, and waiting and sitting and the sun seemed to brighten in the sky and was filled by a brilliant shining dove.

And that was what fear feels like. He checked that, too.
